Changing Plans and Local Response
The festival and its founder, Billy McFarland, had initially announced a return from May 30 to June 2 of this year at Isla Mujeres, Mexico. However, these plans were altered after the Isla Mujeres Tourist Council stated: “We do not have any knowledge of this event and are not associated with any person or company related to it. To us, this is an event that does not exist.”
Last month, McFarland attempted to relocate Fyre Festival to Playa del Carmen, but this news was once again a surprise for local authorities.
On Thursday (April 3), the government of the southern Mexican city issued a statement regarding the rumors about an event named “Fyre 2”, which was translated from Spanish (through Today): “In light of the rumors about an event called ‘Fyre 2’, we inform you that no event with that name will be held in Playa del Carmen. After a thorough review, there is no registration or planning on this matter within the municipality.”

Fyre Festival 2: Expectations and History
On March 28, McFarland held a press conference to “declare” Playa del Carmen as his new location. He expressed, “Our relationship with Playa may be new, but I know I speak for the entire team when I say we cannot ask for a better group of people.”
Tickets for Fyre Festival 2 were offered at prices ranging from $1,400 to $25,000 (approximately £1,081-£13,305), with premium packages costing $1.1 million (£850,000).
McFarland described the event as a “three-day escape to the Mexican Caribbean, where guests can explore during the day with their favorite talents and gather at night to celebrate with music.” Fyre Festival 2 promises “adventures led by international and local talents, offering guests excursions and intimate performances on the beach at night.”
As for the musical acts expected at Fyre Festival 2, no talent has been announced yet. The original Fyre Festival in 2017 was intended to feature performances from Blink-182, Major Lazer, and others.
Originally envisioned by McFarland eight years ago, the Fyre Festival was meant to take place over two days on a private beach in the Bahamas. However, attendees arrived to inadequate conditions, leading to widespread chaos, as detailed in the Netflix documentary Fyre.
McFarland was released from prison in 2022 after pleading guilty to several fraud charges.
