Chrissie Hynde’s Apology to Fans
The Pretenders frontwoman Chrissie Hynde has offered fans an apology of sorts after sharing a set of rules for returning concertgoers.
Controversial Comments on Front Row Seats
In October, Hynde drew the ire of fans when she asked those purchasing tickets for multiple concerts not to occupy front row seats so “local” fans could have a chance. Hynde stated at the time: “When we go on tour, the whole point of the band is that we get to play in front of a new audience every night. That's why we're going on tour!”
Naturally, the post didn’t sit well with fans, who took to social media to argue that anyone paying for stand-alone tickets should have the right to watch the show from the front row if that is their choice.
Now, Hynde has addressed her earlier comments in a recent Instagram post, where she partially apologized for asking fans to put away their phones: “First of all, I'm sorry I never got used to the phone/filming/taking photos culture. I cursed and berated the very audience that supports us. I can't explain how distracting this is and why I have a meltdown when I see my phone. Every night I walk off stage beating myself up and saying it's not worth it, and maybe it's time to quit the guitar and find a new calling.”
She clarified that she is not alone in her opinion, having observed several venues implement a no-phone rule at concerts.
Hynde then reiterated her thoughts about regular fans in the front row at concerts. While she didn’t apologize, she reinforced her stance once again: “Another thing I said that seems to have caused offense in some circles is when I asked about it. Anyone who has seen more than a few shows should step out of the front row and let the locals take the lead.”
She continued: “I'll reiterate that we love seeing people come back for more, but we travel the world to perform to new audiences every night, so it's nice to see the locals out front. Come as one… but be honest!”

Recent Collaborations and Preferences
Elsewhere, Hynde recently joined Queens Of The Stone Age’s Josh Homme, Depeche Mode’s Dave Gahan, Primal Scream’s Bobby Gillespie, and more at a star-studded tribute concert for the late Mark Lanegan earlier this month (December 5).
Hynde also recently explained the reasons why she and The Pretenders don’t play arenas when they could, expressing their preference for clubs and theaters because it’s “better for the crowd and for the band.”
