Chris Martin Thanks Fans
Chris Martin has expressed his gratitude to Coldplay fans in Mumbai, India, for “forgiving” British colonialism.
Concert Highlights in Mumbai
During Coldplay’s concert at Mumbai’s DY Patil Stadium, part of their Music of Spheres world tour, frontman Martin conveyed his appreciation for the fans’ warm welcome, particularly in light of Britain’s colonial past.
“This is our fourth visit to India and the second time we are playing. This was our first time playing a long show and we couldn’t have asked for a better crowd. Thank you everyone for coming today!” he noted.
“Thank you for welcoming us even though we are from the UK. Thank you for forgiving us for all the bad things Britain has done.”
Fans captured the moment and shared the footage online. Comments varied, with one user on Instagram saying, “Chris is healing generational trauma with a mic, a stage, and some tunes,” while another questioned, “Okay, but when did we forgive them?”
Another viewer asked: “What the hell did I just watch?” The moment can be seen here.
The British government governed India from 1858 to 1947, a period known as the British Raj, during which hunger and poverty were prevalent in the Indian subcontinent. The British profited immensely from colonial rule. To date, Britain has never formally apologized for colonizing India.
Around 75,000 people attended the concert, marking the band’s first performance in India since 2016, when they participated in the Global Citizen festival. The Music of Spheres tour includes several upcoming shows in Asia, with scheduled stops in Hong Kong and Seoul.
