Check Out Lola Yang’s Blissful Cover of “Next to Me” by The Cure

Lola Young’s Cover Performance

Lola Young took on “Close to Me.” Check out her version below.

Young recorded a cover of a song from the 1985 Cure album “The Head on the Door” for the Triple J Like a Version series.

“This is just a great song. This is an incredible song,” she said in a video explaining her choice. “This song is quite frankly legendary. This is very interestingly structured. And this is the medicine.”

The South London singer offers a meditative, stripped-back rendition, accompanied by simple psychedelic guitar. Take a look below.

Young’s Debut Album and Creative Insights

Last summer, Young’s debut album received a glowing five-star review from NME, which described it as “the most distinguishing and bold awareness of its experimental trends.”

“The first full-length album of Young moves with an exceptional touch to its production; its eclectic mix of soulful melodies stands out alongside raw, scratchy indie sounds, all of which reflect the complexities of South London desire. This is a collection that feels equally empowering and poignant,” she said.

“Despite the fact that Young’s specific type of longing and introspection may evoke SZA, it holds genuine star quality for the evolution of an already strong artistic identity. This is a record that remains self-assured, even in its deepest and darkest moments.”

Around the same time, Young spoke with NME about her cover and shared insights into the songwriting process. “I believe that any artist who is not honest in their lyrics is easily seen through,” she said.

“I learned that songs are ideal for you when you’ve written them, then they go on to connect with others, but the meaning can change for you over time. The album is gritty, real, and raw. It is honest, and that is what I want to be and what I am right now.”

To celebrate her role as a Cover star, Young curated a playlist titled “Songs for When I Want to Feel Sexy,” featuring tracks from Doja Cat, Gwen Stefani, Willow, Amarae, and more. Check it out here.
