Charlie XCX Reflects on Brat Era
Charlie XCX revealed that letting go of the Brat era is quite challenging for her.
Cultural Impact of Brat
Following his departure last year, “Brat” quickly evolved into a cultural phenomenon, giving rise to the concept of “Brat” Summer and the iconic Lime Green works. This aesthetic became a meme as fans around the globe adopted the hedonistic vibe and attitude of the album.
The influence of the album reached beyond the pop realm, even impacting the presidential campaign of Kamala Harris, prompting political analysts to grapple with the album’s essence.
After dominating cultural conversations for nearly a year, during her performance at Coachella earlier this month, Charlie seemed to signal the end of the Brat era with a giant screen behind her bearing the message: “Maybe the time has come for another species of summer?” She then went on to highlight the artists and directors poised to take the stage this year.
The lineup included acts with newly released projects or upcoming releases, featuring Lorde, Addison Rae, PinkPantheress, Charli, Pulp, and many others.

However, it appears she might be reconsidering the conclusion of the Brat era. In a recent video, Charlie told her fans: “Yesterday I made this TikTok about ‘Summer again?’ and while I was joking, there may be some truth to it.”
“I don’t know. Hmm, it made me reflect on how hard it is to let go of ‘Brat,’ which has deeply shaped my identity and life.”
She further noted: “You know? I started considering culture, tides, and the ebb and flow of life. Once you reach a certain level of success, oversaturation can occur, leading people to want you to disappear — something I understand and somewhat agree with.”
“I believe this allows artists to maintain their cool when they are heavily in the public eye, only to retreat for a time. Yet, I’m also fascinated by the tension of staying relevant for too long. It’s quite exhilarating in its own right.”
Charlie concluded with: “But yes, it’s definitely hard to just say, ‘Okay. Now it’s over.’ I want this to keep going because it’s who I am.”
Then she added: “I just want it to continue.”

‘Brat’ was hailed as the album of the year by NME, which awarded it a four-star review, stating: “All this paints a picture of a moment in 2024.”
The subsequent remix album, “Brat and It Is Completely Different, But Also Brat,” received five stars from NME. Anus Ahmed commented: “In a sense, ‘Brat and It Is Completely Different, But Also Brat’ is a home run for its creator, allowing her to conclude the game on her own terms.”
“She has elevated the art of remixing, keeping the songs dynamic, providing them with a new lease on life instead of allowing them to remain static in their original form.”
