Chappell Roan’s Upcoming Album Insights
Chappell Roan confirmed that her upcoming album will serve as a pop-writing exploration, showcasing her creative journey. Look what she said below.
Release of First Single
Later today (March 13), Roan will release her first single of the year, titled “Donor”. The track, which has been teased for several months, will include the catchy phrase “Good luck, baby!” as the singer delves into the genre of country music.
Speaking on the episode of Today’s Country Radio with Kellee Banren on Apple Music, she explained that despite the release of her country single, her upcoming releases and the album will still expand her pop stylings: “I really did it for entertainment. I do not switch genres or anything like that.”
She elaborated on her choice to explore country music for this song: “I wanted to write a country song because I just thought it would be funny. It’s lighthearted and fun.” Although the song aims for a playful vibe, it also holds a deeper meaning for her as she reconnects with her musical roots.
“I am from the southwest of Missouri,” she shared. “I grew up around Christian and country music, and then discovered ‘Alejandro’ by Lady Gaga, and I thought, ‘I think I like this too.’ So, I’ve always kept country music close to my heart. It’s incredibly nostalgic to ride through Hollywood listening to Jason Aldean or Alan Jackson.”
Another song that inspired “The Giver” was the 2004 Big & Rich hit “Save A Horse (Ride a Cowboy)”: “I thought, I want to feel that on stage. I want to experience it. That’s how I write—imagining how I want to perform it. And I said: ‘I want to create my own version of this song.’”
Roan has been teasing “The Giver” for some time, and she first hinted at it during her appearance on Saturday Night Live last November.
On the show, she told the audience: “Everything you guys say about treating a woman well—only a woman knows how to relate to another woman,” encouraging fans to call the new song “The anthem of the lesbian.”
Prior to this, producer Dan Nigro mentioned in an interview with New York Times that fans could expect a “funny song” from the country genre, indicating that Roan would unveil a “new version” of “Good luck, baby!”
“We’ve never done a country song before, and I hold such a special place in my heart for country music,” she shared on Instagram about the track. “I grew up listening to it every morning on my school bus, surrounded by bonfires, grocery stores, and karaoke.”
Chappell Roan also pondered whether her upcoming album would lean towards country music: “Many people ask if I’m making a country album? My answer… Hmm, right now, I’m just creating songs that make me feel happy and uplifted. The ‘Donor’ is my take on the country vibe; yes, it has classic country elements, but I’m just here to add my unique twist and sprinkle in some fun for y’all.”
Roan “Donor” comes shortly after her performance of the duet “Pink Pony Club” with Elton John at his Oscar party. At the Elton John event, she also completed a set that included more duets with John on “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me” and “Your Song,” songs she had covered on YouTube five years ago before achieving mainstream fame. She performed “Naked in Manhattan,” “Super Graphic Ultra Modern Girl,” “Femininomenon,” “Hot to Go,” and “Good Luck, Baby!” during her set.
The night before her performance, Roan used her voice to dedicate her British award to “trans artists, drag queens, students, sex workers, and Sinead O’Connor,” making headlines after being recognized as Best New Artist at the 67th Grammy Awards and reflecting on her experiences as a new artist.
