Dublin group performed a hit track from the previous NME Cover Star when they recently stopped at the Live Lounge BBC Radio 1 as part of their promo celebration for the release of the third album “Open Wide”.

Live lounge performances and viral success

While in the Live Lounge, the group chose “Messy” as a track that they illuminated by infusing an anemic, indie revolution into a massive hit. They also delivered a performance of their single “Question About You,” which features on their recently released album.

Their cover of “Messy” has become a viral sensation in recent months and has inspired a dance trend on TikTok, featuring in over 250,000 videos.

The song topped the charts in the UK and reached number 24 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the USA. It contributed to Young 2024’s debut album “This Want Want Wons Wonmers” and was featured on Tyler, the Creator’s album ‘Chromakopia’ last year.

As for Inhaler, “Open Wide” was released on February 7, following the release of the last single “Billy (Yes, Yes)” the day before.

New creative directions and album reviews

Speaking with NME in October last year, bassist Robert Kint explained how the group ventured into new territory with their third album. “Working with Tom Harpoon, our producer for this album, we began to think: ‘How can we do this a little differently?’ This made us experiment with new ideas, and eventually, we landed on incorporating an introductory keyboard one day (on ‘Your House’), which informed the song and gave us a new perspective,” he said.

“We definitely became better at writing songs. We worked with a new producer for the first time in this album,” Kint added. “Working with him pushed us to bring our ‘A’ game, and that became the only pressure we faced throughout this process. Just knowing we had to bring our best selves forward.”

“Open Wide” follows the “Reduction and Bruises” of 2023 and the debut album of 2021, “This Will Not Always Be Like That.” This release coincides with the group’s upcoming tour in the UK before they play dates in Europe, with Flowers supporting them. Visit here for the remaining tickets.

In a new review of the album, NME awarded it four stars, describing it as a record that sees the group “continue to bend rock and roll into new forms.”

“Throughout Open Wide, Inhaler demonstrates a powerful confidence that is impossible to resist,” they noted. “Comfortable, cathartic, and a bunch of fun, this is a record that sounds great on headphones, but will truly come alive on stage, for example, during the Glastonbury pyramid performance.”
