Lizzo’s Reflections on Love and Social Media

Earlier this month, Lizzo was a musical guest on *Saturday Night Live*, where she performed a medley of “still bad” and “love in real life,” the latter being the title track of her upcoming fifth studio album. In March, she mentioned that the record was “finished,” and likely to be featured on *SNL* soon.

Lizzo explained how she came up with the name of the album, sharing that it stemmed from her realization of the value of genuine relationships in real life compared to those formed through social media.

“I think that real life is the only place where love exists,” she stated. “I think that I was mistaken in the satisfaction that you receive from social networks as love. There were times when I didn’t turn to the people closest to me or I felt isolated, with the Internet being the only place I felt seen and appreciated.”

“When it ceases to be a safe space and becomes a toxic, destructive place, it also destroys your sense of self-esteem,” she added. “Over the past year and a half, I had to acknowledge that being praised on the Internet does not equate to having real love from people in the world.”

These comments come after Lizzo addressed the sexual harassment lawsuit filed against her in 2023, claiming that she “did nothing wrong.” She faced accusations from three former dancers who alleged harassment and a hostile work environment during her tour. Lizzo denied the claims and expressed that the situation made her contemplate leaving the music industry.

Additionally, Lizzo emphasized her commitment to her health goals earlier this year, stating to her followers: “Let this be a reminder that you can do whatever you think.”
