GloRilla’s SNL Performance
GloRilla performed “Yeah Glo!” along with a selection of tracks from her 2024 album “Glorious” on Saturday Night Live – check out the recording of the performance below.
The Memphis rapper and NME 100 alum made her debut as a musical guest on the show last night (January 18). Introduced by Dave Chappelle, she kicked off her set with “Yeah Glo!” while starting in an orange prison jumpsuit before switching outfits.
Grammy Nominations and Surprising Success
Taken from her 2024 mixtape Ehhthang Ehhthang, “Yeah Glo!” is now up for Grammy nominations in the Best Rap Song and Best Rap Performance categories. The overwhelming success of the song, which was nominated for last year's MTV Video Music Awards and reached the Billboard Hot 100, caught the rapper off guard.
With support from LeBron James, who sang along during her performance, GloRilla expressed her surprise at the track’s success, which even earned her accolades from Beyoncé.
“I was in shock,” she shared with the Associated Press. “I knew it was a good song. Every time I played it for people, they loved it. I didn't know it was going to be this crazy.”
Busta Rhymes also commended her for her “unfiltered” authenticity, noting that her energy embodies “a different type of beauty,” and emphasized her growth, stating she’s “evolving to the level of Beyoncé.”
Later in her SNL performance, GloRilla seamlessly blended “Whatchu Kno About Me,” co-written with rapper Sexyy Red, with “Let Her Cook” from her debut album.
Album Reception and Future Endeavors
Last year, GloRilla released her much-anticipated debut album, Glorious. NME awarded it three stars, noting, “Like the work, “Glorious” is uneven.” The review stated: “There are a few certified hits and a bunch of questionable extras that suggest better quality control is needed here.”
“However, with her undeniable energy and empowering message of girl power, it's still a noteworthy listen, even if it doesn't fully meet the high expectations set by her attention-grabbing singles.”
Meanwhile, GloRilla also secured two spots on NME‘s list of the Top 50 Songs of 2024: Her collaboration with Tyler, The Creator, “Sticky,” was ranked No. 39, and her summer hit with Megan Thee Stallion, “Wanna Be,” took the No. 24 spot.
