Unidentified Aerial Phenomenon Takes the Stage

The improvisational supergroup made its live debut on Thursday (December 26) at a New York venue in Berlin.

The ensemble, named “Unidentified Aerial Phenomenon,” features actors Krumholz (Santa Claus franchise, 10 Things I Hate About You, Oppenheimer), Shannon (Revolutionary Road, Nocturnal Animals, Groundhog Day), and Corrigan (Nice Guys, Superbad, Pineapple Express), alongside Superchunk drummer Wurster, who has collaborated with artists such as Katy Perry, The New Pornographers, and REM.

The debut performance was announced by Wurster on Instagram, who described Unidentified Aerial Phenomenon as an “exciting musical concept” that delivers “improvisational #rocknrollweirdness.” He further encouraged the audience to “bathe in the hypnotic improvisational rhythms” produced by himself, Corrigan, and Shannon, while Krumholz freestyled his raps.

After the show, Krumholz shared a clip with the caption: “I have no idea what I’m doing, but I’m doing it.” Check out this and other footage from the concert below.

This isn’t the first time the three actors have engaged with music: Shannon sometimes leads a cover band named REM, while Krumholz has released tracks under the aliases Hemoglobin and BeenGod StillGod. Additionally, Corrigan’s own musical side project, NY Grimm, opened the Unidentified Aerial Phenomenon show.

It remains uncertain whether this is a one-off event or a precursor to a larger project.

Elsewhere, in 2016, Shannon discussed with NME the songs that defined his life, recounting his first concert experience. “I lived in Kentucky and attended the state fair with my family, and we enjoyed silly outings and ate junk food,” he shared. “Then my mom said, ‘Hey, there’s a concert tonight that only costs five bucks. We should go see the amazing guy playing.’ That guy was Bob Dylan.”
