Bimm Dublin’s Challenges and Restructuring
Last month, it was revealed that Bimm Dublin is one of the top music colleges in Ireland, yet Fontaines DC plans to reduce its workforce by about a third. As reported by RTE, lecturers at the college will need to apply for their positions under a restructuring plan described by union representatives as the “Uber-Isation of Lecturers.”
The college typically employs 135 staff members, with approximately 53 at risk of redundancy. According to Irish Independent, teachers were informed they could apply for 18 new positions, indicating that 35 jobs may be cut. Employees argue that the conditions for the 18 new roles will double for successful candidates. Last week, about 100 students organized a protest in solidarity with lecturers, leading to a large number of planned demonstrations.
The capital of the murder, who met during a visit to Bimm Dublin, also shared their support for lecturers in an official statement on Instagram.
“The experience and management from the Bimm Dublin lecturers provided us with a strong foundation to delve deeper into our craft. This opportunity for leadership and mentorship should not be taken for granted by either current or future college students, nor by the dedicated lecturers who are all accomplished musicians themselves,” they stated.
They continued: “Without the heart of lecturers, these two buildings are mere shells. These individuals fill the halls and classrooms with inspiration and ambition that deserves respect. Students are entitled to the best, both the Irish and international music scene deserves the best, but fundamentally, the lecturers themselves deserve much better. We stand in complete solidarity with them.”
Voices from Fontaines DC
Fontaines DC also commented on the roles that are becoming redundant. This Grammy-nominated group credits their college experience with their rise to international success.

Conor Digan from Fontaines DC told The Irish Independent that the band is “saddened” by the current situation at BIMM, explaining: “This is where we met, where we were encouraged to become songwriters. Music became the center of our lives.”
He added: “Our teachers inspired us to pursue music and taught us invaluable lessons. Losing any of them and the space they provide for young artists to dream would be a significant loss for Irish culture.”
Last year, a video featuring Fontaines DC covering “reptillas” resurfaced, showcasing their time at Bimm Dublin five years before their breakthrough album, Dogrel.
The concert was also referenced back in 2020, when BIMM shared an update on their website to celebrate the band’s achievement of reaching number two on the UK album chart in 2020 with their second album “A Hero’s Death.”

In discussing the changes at the college, a BIMM representative stated: “The proposed changes are a direct response to the feedback we received from students, requesting greater accessibility to staff and a more attractive and affordable educational workforce.”
“Students will continue to have access to a wide range of industry professionals, including senior teachers working at full capacity and associated lecturers in specialized fields, all of whom will receive fair compensation.”
They continued: “We aim to maintain the close-knit, hands-on training environment at BIMM, and believe these proposed changes will further enhance our students’ educational experiences.”
“The point is not that 35 people will become redundant. We plan to redistribute lecturers to new roles and expect that the breadth of experience and industry connections available to our students will remain robust.”
