On Their Unique Approach to Britpop
The Sheffield rock pioneers were spotted on the red carpet at the 2025 BRIT Awards, discussing their fresh take on this Britpop classic. Created for Spotify Singles earlier this year, Oli Sykes and the band reimagined the track as a metal anthem, even earning praise from Liam Gallagher.
“This is a great song; it’s actually one of my favorites, in my top five,” Sykes explained. “We typically cover tracks that no one has heard of, so we thought, ‘Let’s try reinterpreting something everyone knows. Make it easier on ourselves.’ I think it worked out! It was wild that Liam didn’t tear us apart for it…”
Drummer Matt Nicholls added, “We definitely listened to them growing up. It’s hard to ignore them, especially at our age, because Oasis is a defining British band.”
“We expected Liam to completely tear us down, but he said it was really good! It was a cool experience, and I think everything went better than we hoped.”
Influence and Future Plans
The band responded to recent comments from Papa Roach frontman Jacoby Shaddix, who noted Bring Me The Horizon as a major influence for his latest single “Even If It Kills Me.”
In a conversation with NME last month, the nu-metal icon described BMTH as torchbearers for metal music and revealed that while he initially viewed his band as a key influence on them, he now recognizes their impact as well.
“We love Papa Roach a lot,” Sykes said to NME. “We grew up on them and even traveled to London to see them about a decade ago. They are incredible! It’s crazy to think that bands we admired are now acknowledging us—it’s surreal that we’ve influenced them in any way.”
Looking ahead, the frontman reflected on recent statements hinting that Bring Me The Horizon would be taking a break later this year. He mentioned the difficulty in finding downtime as they are eager for new opportunities.
“We need to find some proper downtime at some point; we’ve been discussing how to do that,” he said. “I think we should take a little break, but it’s challenging because there’s always so much we want to do and so many places we want to tour.”
“I believe this break will be beneficial for us, as it seems we were right on the heels of the ‘Post Human’ (EP from 2020’s ‘Survival Horror’)… We haven’t really had a break.”
The band went viral after winning the Best Alternative/Rock Act in 2024. This year, they were nominated for Group of the Year but ultimately lost to Ezra Collective. You can find the full list of winners here.
As the festival season approaches, Bring Me The Horizon have been confirmed as headliners for Reading & Leeds 2025, alongside Chappell Roan, Travis Scott, and Khozier. While they previously performed at a dual site festival, their only main stage appearance to date was during their epic set alongside Arctic Monkeys back in 2022.
Last year, the band spoke with NME about the overwhelming positive reception they received for ‘Nex Gen,’ which was recognized as one of NME‘s best albums of 2024, along with their upcoming R&L slot. Check out that interview here.
