Investigation by Authorities
Prosecutors in Turin initiated an investigation concerning allegations of “contempt for institutions” based on Molko’s comments about Meloni at the festival. The charges could lead to a maximum fine of 5000 euros and necessitate a direct appearance in court.
Contentious Remarks
This situation arose when Molko made disparaging remarks about the Prime Minister, labeling her as “a piece of shit, fascist, racist” during Placebo’s performance. Meloni, the leader of the Brothers of Italy party who oversees the right-wing coalition government that took power in 2022, subsequently initiated legal proceedings.
The accusations are particularly focused on slander against Italian government institutions, including parliament, courts, or the military, which is deemed a specific offense under Italian law.
