Brian Molko of Placebo Accused of Calling Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni ‘Famest’ and ‘Racist’

Accusations Against Brian Molko

The frontman of Placebo, Brian Molko, faced accusations of slander after allegedly describing the Prime Minister of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, as “face” and “racist.”

Incident at Sonic Park Festival

A video from the incident in July 2023 captured Molko referring to Meloni in Italian as “a piece of shit fascist, racist,” followed by a “Fuck you” directed at a crowd of 10,000 fans during the Sonic Park festival in Turin.

Consequently, prosecutors in Turin initiated an investigation and filed a lawsuit against Molko for slander.

As reported by the Italian newspaper La Stampa, the Italian Ministry of Justice has authorized the prosecutor’s office to commence a trial against Molko on charges of “disrespect for institutions,” which could incur a fine ranging from 1,000 euros (830 pounds) to 5,000 euros (4,150 pounds).

According to the publication, “the crime under consideration is subject to direct challenge in court.”

Background on Giorgia Meloni

Meloni leads the Italian Brothers party, known for its neo-fascist roots. She heads the Right Government of Italy and won the 2022 elections amid an anti-immigration campaign, also planning to limit LGBT rights.

Earlier, Meloni expressed intentions to emphasize “traditional Christian family values,” opposing abortion, revising the EU, lowering taxes, and denying same-gender couples access to surrogacy and adoption rights.

The Italian Criminal Code penalizes anyone who “publicly disrespects the republic,” encompassing the government, parliament, courts, and military.
