Reflections on a Cultural Icon

During the first episode of Podcast Lulu: Rogue Moments, the soloist and former frontman of the Culture Club looked back at becoming a huge fan of the late icon in his youth. This realization came after Lula mentioned that “people looked at her differently” after she collaborated with Bowie.

“Because I think that Bowie was one of those people that if he liked you, it was like: ‘Oh, I am absolutely cool, don’t even try to take into account that I am not,’” George responded.

He then reminisced about skipping school to see Bowie return from Berlin to London in 1976.

George shared, “At Victoria Station, when I was 14 years old, there is a photograph that I recently discovered (…), he arrived at Victoria Station in a grand Cadillac, and I remember I was photographed, and it hit me that I could get into trouble because of it. What if my mother sees this?”

“So, I recently saw (the photograph), and it is overwhelming.” You can see the image in the post below.

George mentioned that he had started sending Bowie emails when he got older after meeting the star. “I would send these tirades of love and worship, and I would get replies,” he explained. The two artists even spoke on the phone.

The singer, who called Bowie one of his greatest influences, recalled first seeing how the legendary artist lived when he was 11 years old in the early ’70s.

“I used to sit near his house,” George admitted. “There is a famous story about (Bowie’s ex-wife) Angie, who opened the window and told us to be quiet. She opened the window and said: ‘You boys should just go home!’”

In 2020, George spoke in an interview with NME that Bowie once congratulated him on winning Stars in Their Eyes, where he impersonated the late icon.

“I won Stars in Their Eyes twice, and my manager said: ‘Who the hell told you to do this?!’” he recounted.

“When I had dinner with Bowie in 2005 in New York, he mentioned: ‘Oh, I heard you won Stars in Their Eyes!’ I looked at him and said: ‘No, I’ve never won – I won twice,’ to which he replied: ‘Good boy – I would not expect anything less!’”

George added, “The second time I won, I took it seriously and worked with a vocal coach.”

In other news, the special Bowie release “Ready, Set, Go!” a live album is set to be released this year. Meanwhile, his former Dam Trio collaborators will reunite for the “Back to Berlin” tour across the UK and Europe in 2025.
