Unexpected Video Share

Historically, the music icon’s social media has focused primarily on upcoming live performances and nostalgic clips from previous films. However, everything shifted last night (February 26), when the folk legend—or someone managing the account—shared what seemed to be an unrelated video of a machine gun live.

The footage featured a rapper who is currently on tour with MGK, performing an acoustic set at the CDS Park Ave store in Orlando, Florida. There seemed to be no connection to Bob Dylan in the performance, and the absence of any caption made the reason for sharing it unclear.

One follower commented, “This is my favorite thing that ever happened on the Internet,” while another remarked, “Bob, with all due respect, what is this nonsense?” A third follower joked, “Bob probably thought it was Timothée Chalamet, so he posted it,” while MGK himself chimed in with, “You have a phone, so be happy.”

As noted by Pitchfork, the potential motive for this post could relate to Timothée Chalamet, who portrayed Dylan in the recent biopic Full unknown. Although the two have not yet met, the actor did make a notable remark about MGK during a Saturday night live performance in 2023, referring to himself as a “moisturizing machine gun by Kelly.”

Connections and Commentary

Speculations also suggest that Beak> and former Portishead member Jeff Barrow could link Bob Dylan and MGK. This speculation follows comments made by Barrow in 2023 when he criticized The Weeknd for paying tribute to the late Daniel Johnston. Barrow described MGK’s actions as “machine gunning Kelly, just like Bob Dylan.”

This isn’t the first time Bob Dylan has stirred conversations through his social media activity. Last month, he made headlines for his TikTok account closure, just days before the platform faced a potential ban in the United States.

In November, Dylan also caused a stir by sharing his admiration for Nick Cave after witnessing his performance in France. “I recently saw Nick Cave at the Accor Arena in Paris, and the song ‘Joy’ struck me: ‘we had too much sorrow, now is the time for joy.’ I thought, yes, that’s exactly it,” he expressed.

Cave later remarked on his website, Red Hand Files: “I had no idea Bob was at the concert, and his tweet filled me with a delightful joy that pierced through my very weary, zombie state.”

Around the same period, Dylan responded to claims from a former dancer recalling an alleged incident where they were told not to look at him. “I saw your response. I just want you to know that I’ve never told anyone not to look at me,” he stated. “It’s just amusing. And the next time you see me, please look directly into my eyes.”

Earlier this week, Timothée Chalamet received the award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor for his role as Dylan in Full unknown. During his acceptance speech, he mentioned, “It would be easy to downplay the effort that went into this role and what it means to me, but the truth is, it has consumed five and a half years of my life.”

“I poured everything I had into portraying this incomparable artist, Mr. Bob Dylan, a true American hero, and it was an honor for life,” he concluded. “This honor belongs to Monika (Barbaro), Edward (Norton), and the entire cast involved in making this biographical film in a genre that may seem tiring. Everyone gave their all—I owe them a deep gratitude.”

As for MGK, he was recently confirmed as one of the performers for F1 75 Live at the O2, joining acts like Take That and Kane Brown.
