Debbie Harry Reflects on Aging
Blondie frontwoman Debbie Harry has shared her thoughts on turning 80 this year and discussed the “beauty of aging.”
Upcoming Milestone Birthday
The singer-songwriter is set to celebrate a significant birthday on July 1, 2025. Times Harry stated: “I don’t walk around every minute thinking, ‘Oh God, I’m going to be 80,’ but that’s kind of how I feel.”
She went on to say: “My mother believed she was 25 in her mind, and I felt the same way. However, fixating on age can lead to your downfall. I don’t desire the same life I had in my youth.
“I did it! That’s the beauty of aging—you truly understand what life is about. It resides in your heart, soul, and memory bank… or does that sound like an excuse? Should I go out and party every night?”
Harry also discussed the idea of dating at 79. When asked if she was in a relationship, she humorously replied: “No! God forbid! I’m terrified. Just kidding, but I don’t think dating is feasible. How about you?”
The singer, who previously dated Blondie co-founder Chris Stein, remarked that she was “not in a position to date online” until she learned about a celebrity dating app called Raya.
– Okay, okay, I’ll do it! – Harry responded. “And I’m going to follow up with you and let you know how it goes. I’m definitely not as adventurous as I used to be, but my curiosity remains. I love how the world keeps turning.”
Additionally, Harry mentioned that “Home Depot is where I flirt,” noting, “There are big, strong men there.” She reminisced: “I spotted a man in the gardening department who seemed very attractive, but he was busy.
“We just exchanged glances and it felt like a moment.”
In another part of the conversation, the frontwoman recounted an incident where she was once surrounded on stage by a group of Hell’s Angels.
Blondie is expected to release a new album sometime in 2025, produced by Grammy-winning John Congleton (St. Vincent, Phoebe Bridgers, The War on Drugs). This album will serve as a sequel to 2017’s The Pollinator.
In 2022, it was announced that Sex Pistols bassist Glen Matlock would contribute to the recording of Blondie’s next studio album. He has also performed with the band during recent live shows, including their set at Glastonbury 2023.
During a chat with NME last November regarding the sequel to The Pollinator, Matlock shared insights on the project’s progress while recording his segments. “It sounded great. It had a heavier, somewhat atonal quality,” he explained.
“Some members of the group are younger and lean towards a modern sound. I believe the essence of the song is what matters most. However, I have yet to hear the completed version featuring Debbie’s vocals. It will be intriguing to listen to.”
When asked about the album’s release timeline, he mentioned, “I think it will be early in the new year, but I don’t want to say too much since I’m just the bass player in Blondie and not entirely sure.”
Harry mentioned to NME in 2021 that Blondie was “planning a dedicated timeframe to record multiple tracks” for another album. “We’re already considering 10-12 songs, but it’s too early to discuss specifics,” she noted back then.
