Earlier this week (February 5), the iconic metal band announced its last living show, set to take place in Birmingham on July 5. They also unveiled an impressive lineup of opening acts and special guests, featuring names like Metallica, Killers, Panther, Lamb of God, Mastodon, Alice in Chains, Halestorm, and recent Grammy winners, among many others.

Morello’s Role in the Show

Tom Morello—renowned solo artist and former guitarist for Rage Against the Machine—will play a prominent role in the concert as its musical director. In his statement, he described the final show of Ozzy Osbourne and his band as “the greatest heavy metal show in history.”

In an interview with NME at Villa Park, shortly after the announcement of the last Black Sabbath concert, Sharon Osbourne, wife and manager of Ozzy, discussed Morello’s involvement as a music director, saying, “He knows about all different music genres, but especially heavy metal. He is incredibly passionate about everything he does and is a great friend. He willingly volunteered, and what he managed to assemble is amazing. He will coordinate all the groups that perform together and arrange the songs. This is a significant undertaking, and he is more than capable of handling it.”

Sharon also shared details about the event layout, explaining: “The day kicks off at noon, with icons performing together, doing a Black Sabbath song and one or two of their own. The collaborations will showcase pairings you’d never see otherwise.”

She added, “Tom Morello will be performing with Tool’s drummer (Danny Carey), and they will be joined by Billy Corgan. They are all from Chicago, so they know their craft.”

“Then you will see Slash and Duff (McKagan) alongside whoever they collaborate with. David Draiman (Disturbed) will perform and sing, while Jonathan (Davis) from Korn will join in with the Red Hot Chili Peppers, featuring Chad Smith or someone else! Alice in Chains will also perform a set.”

When asked if she would prefer a show solely featuring Black Sabbath with a few supporting acts, Sharon responded, “No, this is a celebration—a tribute to the genre and its pioneers who paved the way for these groups. Typically, such things happen posthumously, so it’s wonderful that these artists can still appreciate this moment while they are alive!”

Tickets for “Black Sabbath: Back to the Beginning” will go on general sale at 10:00 am GMT on the upcoming Friday (February 14)—you can purchase yours here.

In related news, Ozzy Osbourne recently shared that he “cannot walk” in a new interview regarding the final Black Sabbath show, and Sharon assured fans that his illness “does not affect his voice.”

Black Sabbath members Tony Iommi and Geezer Butler have both released statements about the upcoming reunion on social media.
