Director’s Announcement and Cast Reveal

After months of speculation regarding Sam Mendes’ upcoming film about The Fab Four, the director unveiled a series of advertisements at Cinemacon Sony on March 31.

The announcements included a first look at the actors portraying the legendary members of the group – with Harris Dickinson as John Lennon, Paul Mescal as Paul McCartney, Barry Keoghan as Ringo Starr, and Joseph Quinn as George Harrison.

It was also revealed that each Beatle will star in their own film, all scheduled to hit theaters in April 2028. The ambitious franchise, which is expected to become a major cinematic event, has been titled: The Beatles: A Kinematographic Event with Four Films.

Fan Reactions on Social Media

Following the initial reveal of the cast, fans on social media expressed their divided opinions regarding the upcoming films.

Many fans appeared pleased with the latest announcements, applauding the cast for their talents and expressing confidence that hair and makeup teams would help them resemble the original Beatles.

“This could be one of the greatest things that I saw when I saw,” one user on X/Twitter commented, while another added, “Beatles, reimagined with this actor? I’m already in line for tickets.”

The third user hailed the casting choice, saying they are “fantastic actors,” while others were primarily drawn to the confirmation of Stranger Things star Joseph Quinn: “I really Boutta watch the biographical film ‘Beatles’ for Joseph Quinn, Lord, have mercy,” one joked.

Conversely, some fans were not as convinced by the films and took to social media to critique the cast for lacking resemblance to the original Fab Four.

“In what world do you think this group looks like the ‘Beatles’? Great talent, but bad casting,” one wrote. Another chimed in, “Four famous men who do not look like the Beatles are starring in the Beatles movie!! Good…” while a third commented, “How does none of them resemble the people they’re portraying? It’s just four white guys trying to play four white guys.”

While some fans focused on the visual differences of the actors from the original members, others raised specific concerns regarding the casting. Complaints included Sony’s strategy of casting “any popular actor” without a more careful consideration, as well as remarks about Harris Dickinson potentially being “too tall” to play John Lennon.

“Harry Dickinson is too tall. That casting is a mistake,” one user said, while another questioned why the least famous actor was chosen for the role of John Lennon: “It’s funny they picked the least known actor to play John Lennon…” they wrote.

According to Variety, Mendes’ decision to create four films comes after years of deliberation over a mini-series format, ultimately deciding against it.

Specific details remain scarce, but it is expected that each of the four films will be told from the perspective of one of the Beatles. This will be the first time in history that musical rights to the Beatles’ discography are granted for a film.

Confirmation of the actors comes after previous reports that Quinn would portray the late George Harrison. Prior to that, Gladiator 2 director Ridley Scott mentioned that Paul Mescal would be playing Paul McCartney in the film, and Ringo Starr himself seemingly confirmed that Barry Keoghan would portray the drummer.

Last summer, it was indicated that Mendes was in negotiations with two actors, including Harris Dickinson as John Lennon and Charlie Rowe for the role of Harrison. Rowe now seems to be out of the project, although he may appear in a different role.
