Matt Helders’ Initiative
Matt Helders joined Cameo to assist those impacted by the wildfires in Los Angeles.
The drummer of Arctic Monkeys took to his Instagram Story to announce his involvement with the video recording platform.
He wrote: “Los Angeles is where I have called home for the past 13 years. My daughter was born and raised here, she goes to school here, and we are grateful to be here.
“Amanda (Blank) and I are doing everything we can personally and privately to help, but to do more and shine a light on the organizations that do so much to help, I’m going to be doing a limited run on @cameo and making a donation. All proceeds are donated to @daylaborernetwork, a community that inspires me and that I greatly admire.”
He shared a link to his Cameo page for fans to access. Here.
Impact of the Wildfires
A series of wildfires that began last Tuesday (January 7) have resulted in the confirmed death of 24 individuals, the evacuation of over 180,000 residents, and the destruction of approximately 12,000 buildings.
Helders’ statement followed Beyoncé’s generous donation of $2.5 million (£2 million) to the Los Angeles bushfire relief fund through BeyGOOD, while Metallica contributed $500,000 (£409,664).
Jamie Lee Curtis also gave $1 million (£820,000) to the relief efforts after discussions with California Governor Gavin Newsom, and Charli XCX encouraged brands sending her clothes to instead donate them to those affected by the ongoing bushfires in Los Angeles.
Additionally, Guitar Center unveiled a new program aimed at assisting musicians who require instrument or equipment replacements.
The devastation has also impacted several celebrities: Iron Maiden guitarist Adrian Smith confirmed that his Malibu residence was destroyed, and Primus’ Lear LaLonde reported that his home was reduced to rubble.
Celebrity Responses
Recently, Paris Hilton recounted watching her house burn on television, while other notable names like James Woods, Billy Crystal, Cary Elwes, and Mark Hamill have also been severely affected.
Since then, Paris Hilton has donated $100,000 (£81,932) and established a fund to assist displaced families.
Members of the Los Angeles music community have shared with NME the devastating effects of the ongoing bushfires that continue to ravage the city, impacting numerous venues, studios, and artists.
