Adam Holt Steps Down as Doctor of Medical Sciences in New Zealand; Myra Hemara and Matt Kidd Take on Co-MDS Roles

Leadership Transition at Universal Music New Zealand

Universal Music New Zealand is experiencing a change in leadership as managing director Adam Holt prepares to resign after more than three decades with the company.

Holt, who has been at the helm of the New Zealand division for 24 years, will officially retire on April 30. The company has promoted current general managers Myra Hemara and Matt Kidd to serve as joint directors, effective May 1, reporting to Sean Warner, President of Universal Music Australia and New Zealand.

Commenting on Holt’s departure, Warner stated: “Throughout his tenure, he consistently fostered a positive culture at both UMNZ and UMA, earning immense respect from employees and artists alike.”

“Adam is a passionate music enthusiast, a caring mentor, and an unmatched professional who led from the front and built lifelong friendships at UMG, among artists and partners worldwide.”

Holt joined Universal Music Group via his previous company Polygram and has dedicated a total of 34 years to the organization.

Reflections on a Remarkable Career

“Leading the New Zealand division for UMG has been the experience of a lifetime. I am incredibly proud of what we’ve accomplished and the challenges we’ve overcome over the years, but the time has come for both me and the company to embark on the next chapter,” Holt remarked.

“I extend my heartfelt thanks to Sir Lucian Grainge and Sean for trusting me with UMNZ for so long, and many thanks to the entire Universal Music team across New Zealand and Australia. You are an amazing group of people, and I will miss you dearly. Most importantly, my gratitude goes to all the artists I’ve had the honor of serving during my time at Universal. I am truly grateful for each and every one of you.”

The newly appointed joint managing directors bring a wealth of experience to Universal Music’s New Zealand operations. Hemara joined the company in 2006, playing a pivotal role in establishing the digital department and strategy for Universal Music New Zealand. In 2017, she was promoted to general manager, overseeing international artist marketing and audience development.

Meanwhile, Kidd has been with UMNZ for 12 years, starting in advertising and public relations before advancing to lead internal repertoire and business development. As general manager since 2017, he has focused on showcasing New Zealand talent in global markets.

Warner noted that both leaders have been “at the forefront of the changes we’ve implemented in New Zealand over the past couple of years.” Together with Tony Jenks, the Chief Financial Officer and Commercial Director, they will form the executive management team for UMNZ operations.

“It is a tremendous privilege and honor to be given the opportunity to lead Universal Music New Zealand alongside Matt,” Hemara expressed.

“The legacy that Adam has created for our artists and employees offers an incredible foundation for Matt and me to build upon. I look forward to fostering a culture of communication, creativity, and collaboration while ensuring even greater success for our immensely talented artists.”

Kidd added: “I am thrilled to take on this new role at such an exciting time in the industry, where the landscape and ways of developing our artists are rapidly evolving. I’m excited to be part of this incredible team and continue driving excellence and innovation for our artists in New Zealand and beyond.”

Artists signed with Universal Music New Zealand include Lord, Kiki Rockwell, Lance Savari, and Crowded House, among others.

The leadership changes at Universal Music New Zealand reflect the wider shifts within Universal Music Group. Less than two weeks ago, UMG’s Republic Team—which includes Island Records, Def Jam Recordings, Mercury Records, and Republic Records—announced a new round of executive promotions and hires across various departments.
