Catch the Debut of Julien Baker & Torres’ Tender Song “Bottom of a Bottle” on The Daily Show

Julien Baker and Torres Collaborate

Julien Baker & Torres debuted their new song “Bottom of a Bottle” on Daily Show last night, just before the release of their first album together on April 18 – check it out below.

New Album Highlights

This track is the fourth shared from the album “Send the My Way Prayer,” following “Sugar in the Tank,” “Sylvia,” and “Tuesday.”

The song is a delicate piece that showcases their vocal performances, especially Torres’s voice, taking center stage: “I went to swim in the river of four roses/the next thing that I knew, I was horizontal, and my friends/went fishing from the bottom,” they sing together in harmony.

On Daily Show, they sat down with host Michael Kosta to discuss the album, their creative process, and their upbringing in religion. “I think there is a notion that when you talk about the practice of prayer, you’re referring to dogmatic religious beliefs,” Baker stated. “However, I feel that organized religion is not necessarily synonymous with that. Perhaps it often interferes with the yearning for the divine.”

As for the album’s unique title, Torres remarked: “I’m, of course, proud of it. We are strange. But if it were up to me, it would just be a country record.”

Baker and Torres first considered creating music together after performing at a show in Lincoln Center, Chicago, in 2016. Torres told Kosta, “Julien and I have been friends for quite some time, and when the pandemic hit, I reached out to her out of the blue because I had been thinking about making a country record.”

“But I didn’t want to do it alone. Julien was the first person who came to my mind because she’s from Tennessee. I’m from Georgia. It just made sense.”

In 2024, Torres opened for Baker’s show, and the duo performed two new songs together. In November, they announced performances at a festival and launched a new website, eventually sharing their first collaborative piece, “Sugar in the Tank,” in December.

In recent years, Baker has been busy with Boygenius alongside Phoebe Bridgers and Lucy Dacus, and the trio released their second album, “The Record,” in 2023. Her last solo album, “Little Oblivions,” arrived in 2021. Meanwhile, Torres released her sixth album, “What a Time to Be Alive,” last January.
