Rivalry in the R&B Scene

The trio talked with NME in the lead-up to the Brit Awards 2025 this weekend, where they were part of the shortlist for the R&B Act award, alongside Cleo Sol, George Smith, Michael Kiwanuka, and Ray.

Reflecting on comments made to NME last summer—when they called for more R&B girl groups to break into the mainstream—Flo noted that they are still waiting to see new contenders emerge.

“Well, it would be nice to see more R&B girl groups because we want to keep it competitive,” said George Douglas. “Come on, girls, we need a little rivalry in this life!”

“It’s boring to be the only girl, and it would be more fun (with many of us). Besides rivalry, we’re talking about women, so the more, the better.”

Stella Quaresma elaborated on why R&B continues to thrive with “real music and real lyrics,” adding that “melodies evoke genuine feelings.”

“This is very authentic,” she said. “You can cry, dance, and laugh along with it.”

“There’s new music, we’re going on tour, and we have festivals lined up,” Douglas remarked. “We just hope to perform live because we spent so much time last year hiding away, working on the album. Now that it’s out, we’re excited to get out there.”

“Access All Areas” was released in November and received a four-star review from NME, which described it as an album that aims to “bring back the glory days.”

“With ‘Access All Areas’, Flo has it all: talent, charisma, and star power on display. The nostalgia trip has pushed the trio so far, and now it seems they are on the verge of a true breakthrough,” the review stated. “Even if ‘Access All Areas’ does not signal the return of the dominance of Girl Group R&B, the groundswell Flo has built over the past two years hints that the floodgates are about to open.”
