Reflecting on His Journey

On Saturday evening (March 1), he was honored as the British Star at the O2 ceremony, following in the footsteps of previous winners like Adele and Sam Smith.

When he took the stage, Smith seized the opportunity to voice his concerns regarding the challenges currently facing the music industry, as well as his suggestions for improvement.

“I was a child raised by a single mother relying on free school meals at a state school where there were instruments only because of government-supported schemes,” he began. “And here I am, a four-time nominee from the Brits, a graduate of the Russell Group University, and the biggest hitmaker of 2024.”

“But tonight, as I capture the nation’s attention with this award that grants me significant influence, I want to ask three questions. My first is for the government: if British music is one of our most powerful cultural exports, why have we treated it as an afterthought for so many years?”

“How many more venues must close, how many more music programs must be cut before we understand that we cannot simply celebrate success; we must protect the foundations that build it?”

“My second question is for the largest venues and arenas around the world: if artists fill your spaces, and your stadiums are built on their foundations, what are you doing to keep those foundations alive?”

“And my third question is for the industry, for the leaders in this room and those behind the scenes: are we building careers, or are we just chasing moments? Because moments fade, but careers take time. Therefore, please stop moving past artists after their first viral hit; it is crucial for us. Moments disappear, but a career lasts forever.”

Smith was one of the three nominees for the Award Star Award, alongside Elmien and good neighbors, selected by a panel of music journalists, radio executives, music television channels, songwriters, producers, and talent bookers.

He also secured fourth place in the BBC Sound of 2025 list.
