Mars Volta’s Debut: Still Not a Null Album, Opening for Deftones in Portland

Mars Volta Debuts New Material

Mars Volta debuted last night (February 25), which has not yet been reserved for the album, opening for Deftones in Portland.

Surprising Fans With a New Setlist

On his first show of the year, the progressive rock group surprised fans in the heart of Moda, playing exclusively new material. This follows rumors about an upcoming 18-track album titled “Lucro Sucio; Los Ojos del Vacio,” set to be released later this year after product listings leaked on social media.

According to Transparent, previous leaks about their ninth album hinted at a release date of April 11, although the band has not confirmed these details. Nevertheless, fans who attended last night’s show reported that 18 new songs were performed, aligning with the rumors.

Setlist details from Metalinations have revealed potential song titles like “Fins,” “Voice in My Knives,” “Dizhtor de Mi Sombra,” “Detrara de la Puerta Drada,” and “Lurcro Susio.” Check out the footage from the concert below.

Mars Volta released six studio albums from 2003 to 2012 before disbanding due to tensions between founding members Bixler-Zaval and Rodriguez-Lopez. In the years that followed, the duo formed a new band called Antemasque and made a comeback in 2017.

The decision to return to Mars Volta was tied to the feeling of reconnecting with “family,” as Bixler-Zaval explained in an interview with NME in 2022. “This is an old friend of the family with whom we wanted to start communicating again. It just took some time to do it right.” They felt that the reissue of their previous material in 2021 helped them close the door on the past and move forward.

Mars Volta released their self-titled album in September 2022. According to NME, “The Mars Volta is a record that instantly grabs attention, while also rewarding repeated listening, thanks to its meticulously crafted compositions (just let your ears bask in the radiant third single in a magnificent mix).”
