Tony Hawk Remembers the “Transformative” Nirvana Concert and Wishes Kurt Cobain Could Meet His Grandson

Tony Hawk Reflects on Nirvana

Tony Hawk was reminiscing about watching Nirvana perform live on air, expressing sorrow that Kurt Cobain would never meet his grandson.

The Impact of a Legendary Concert

Tony Hawk’s story intertwines with Nirvana’s as the legendary skater witnessed the iconic grunge group from Seattle perform in 1991. Additionally, Hawk’s son Riley will marry in September this year.

Currently, Tony Hawk reflects on the “transformative” experience he had watching the band, recollecting a ticket from the Nirvana concert in Washington in 1991.

In a recent Instagram story, which was also shared on Reddit, Hawk recounted his experience from the 1991 concert: “I fought my way from the Shut Up and Skate event in Houston Skatepark for this concert in 1991. It was transformative. That night we all experienced something rare and powerful. The world will never be the same.”

Francis Bean Cobain, who was only a year old when Kurt passed away, welcomed Ronin Wooker Cobain Hawk in September last year, just a year after marrying Riley Hawk.

Memories of a Father

Before Ronin’s arrival, Francis memorialized her late father on the 30th anniversary of his death, saying: “I wish I could know my father. I would want to hear the cadence of his voice, learn how he liked his coffee, or how he would tell stories before bed. I often wonder, would I recognize his scent of Camel lights and strawberry Nesquik (his favorite, as I’ve been told)?”

She also added: “There is deep wisdom in grasping how precious life is. He imparted a lesson about death that only comes from the experience of losing someone. This knowledge becomes a gift, teaching us to love ourselves and those around us with compassion, openness, and grace, especially given that our time here is fleeting.”

Francis Bean also shared a collection of photographs of her father from his childhood and reflected on a letter Kurt wrote to her before her birth.

“His last line says: ‘Wherever you go or wherever I go, I will always be with you.’ He kept that promise because he is present in many ways. Whether it’s through a song or in our shared mannerisms, in those moments I spend with my father, it feels transcendental. For those who wonder how it feels to live with the memories of those they’ve lost, I hold you in my thoughts today. The meaning of our grief is universal.”

Furthermore, Nirvana is set to perform at two events for an unexpected reunion this year. They first took the stage at the Fireid Benefit concert in Los Angeles, joined by Joan Jett, Kim Gordon, St. Vincent, and Dave Grohl’s daughter, Violet.

Earlier this month, Nirvana reunited once again for a special concert celebrating SNL’s 50th anniversary, where they collaborated with Post Malone on vocals.
