The Canadian singer, who released her album “So Loade What What” on Friday (February 21), has drawn comparisons to pop stars from the 1990s and 2000s, including icons like Christina Aguilera and the Pussycat Dolls.
However, it is Spears who receives the most attention in these comparisons, with fans noting similarities in their vocal styles and choreography. In a recent interview with Independent, Mcrae shared her perspective on being compared to the “Toxic” singer.
“I find this flattering and terrible. This is such a crazy statement, because no one can compare with Britney Spears. It’s like comparing someone to Michael Jackson!” she remarked. “This is a plan!”
Album Review and Musical Style
A four-star review from NME highlighted the work of McRae’s producers (ONEREPUBLIC frontman Ryan Tedder and Kylbox Kyliber Lostboy Minoga), noting that they “raise fresh, ready for club shocks with glossy fillers from the phone of the phone’s uprising.”
The review continued: “Slick ‘Miss Armstilia’ recalls the vibe of Ciara and Pussycat Dolls, while ‘I Know Love’ and ‘Means That I Care’ bring early Rihanna’s dance hall influences. The ‘Renewable Door’, a powerful ballad about toxic relationships, showcases one of the more experimental tracks reminiscent of Britney Spears’ album ‘In the Zone’.”
Further remarks indicated, “The result is a strong collection of bop, giving McRae room for future growth. It shines in sultry and self-confident moments, but ‘So Close to What’ also proves she has different shades in her artistic palette.”
Following her second studio album, McRae is still honing her ambitions. NME rated the LP four stars, stating: “Mcrae is obviously still battling with her ambitions. ‘Think Later’ contains enough intrigue to suggest that this is an artist finally polishing her identity, dancing and shining throughout.”
In other news, the singer recently joined Troye Sivan on stage during a collaborative round with Charlie XCX in Los Angeles as a special guest to perform “You,” her collaboration with the singer “Reza.”
Next month, Mcrae will embark on an 80-day world tour with shows and festivals across South America, North America, Europe, and the UK.
