About the Song

The acoustic track features BlondShell, also known as Sabrina Teitelbaum, singing: “How bad it is to hurt to count / whether to cause pain at all / I will return if you take me twice,” interrupting the notion of whether a healthy relationship holds less value if there is no internal conflict.

Directed by Hannah Bon, the lyrical video for “Two Times” showcases the singer in the studio, capturing moments as she performs the track.

In a recent press release, Blondshell remarked on the song: “I often see films and shows where conflict is the only way to express love. Many stories depict people working hard to make someone else love them, which seems to validate relationships.”

“This song questions if mere solidity is enough. What if the relationship is just good, but healthy? Does that hold less value? This inquiry is painful as it asks how much one is capable of being in worthwhile relationships. However, it is also a song about love in that way.”

“Two Times” marks the third single from her upcoming second album “If You Ask for a Picture,” following “T&A” and the lead single “What Is Fair.” The LP is set for release on May 2 through Partisan and is available for pre-order here.

The album title is inspired by a line from Mary Oliver’s 1986 poem Dog. Taytelbaum explains, “There’s a part of the poem that states: ‘I do not need to tell you everything that I went through. This is just another story about how someone is trying to survive.’”

“What I love about songs is that they can portray a snapshot of a person or a relationship, delivering a glimpse of history that can sometimes be more impactful than capturing the entirety.”

BlondShell – “If You Ask for a Picture”

BlondShell’s 2023 debut album received five stars from NME, which praised it as “a complete triumph in several ways. Rarely do emerging artists have the opportunity to shift their sound and let their life experiences inform their music.”

“Too often creators become stagnant or, even worse, fade away — but this wasn’t the case with Teitelbaum. Instead, we have one of the year’s standout alternative rock albums that promises to resonate for a long time.”

Since then, she released the single “Docket” with Bully, which NME recently highlighted as one of the best songs of 2024.

Last year, NME interviewed BlondShell about her self-titled debut album for our Cover Series, where she discussed how her personal experiences led her to create deeply emotive songs — “Because maybe this will help me feel better.”

One example is “Sober Together,” where she captures her efforts to support a friend through sobriety while they confront relapses.

“I was so mad at this person, and I ended up writing the song ‘Fuck You’ to let it out,” she shared in an interview. “As I wrote it, I realized: ‘Fuck you, but I also love you, and I wouldn’t be angry if I didn’t care about you.’”

“This helped me connect with my feelings toward that person. I was grateful for it—it feels easier to acknowledge ‘I still love you’ rather than dwell on ‘you did this wrong.’”
