Recently, the group was not unfamiliar to surprise live cooperation when last month the legend of Smith Johnny Marr joined the group on stage in Manchester.

The Scottish indie group performed at the city studios of Aviva on January 18 for a show as part of the Amazon Music City Sessions series, which was broadcast on Prime Video and Amazon Music Twitch Channel.

“Building It” from the album was the first track in which they collaborated with the legend of Smith Marr, which was followed by “Want” from their second album “You Could Have It So Much Better”.

This collaboration concluded with a classic version of “Bigmouth Strikes Again”, originally released on their 1986 album, The Queen Is Dead.

In an interview with NME last September, frontman Alex Kapranos noted that there seems to be a resurgence of demand for groups like theirs to return. “Of course, things come and go in fashion,” he explained. “Right now, it appears there’s a hunger for good groups that can perform; those that possess a raw energy and intensity.”

He added: “A perfect example is an English band that has recently won the Mercury Prize. I saw them play a couple of months ago, and I was absolutely blown away. Fontaines DC are another excellent band. I experienced this with Sprints when I saw them; they’re so much more than the sum of their parts. Something magical happens when these people perform together. Regardless of how polished your pop sounds, you will never grasp this unique energy that emerges when musicians share the stage.”

“Over the past 10 or 15 years, we’ve seen many wonderful acts, but they can become somewhat stale. People can sense that. I believe there’s a genuine desire for that rawness and depth that only a band can provide.”

The Human Fear marks the band’s first studio album since the critically acclaimed Always Ascending. In a four-star review of the new album, NME stated: “In uncertain and frightening times, where do we find confidence? On the post-punk-studded landscape, Kapranos asks: ‘Is this what we want? To be with others who understand who we are and what we’ve done?’ This album is an answer to that question.”

“On the live track ‘Night or Day’, he proclaims: ‘I will never be bored with you or what you do.’ This is a love letter to the idea of being together as a band. Still unabashedly pushing through, with driving rhythms and a churning chorus, ‘Human Fear’ – as he promised – delivers on that notion.”
