Self-Esteem Explores ’69’: A New Single Featuring Drag Legend Meatballs

Self-Commandance Releases New Single

Self-Commandance has unveiled a new single titled “69.” Check it out below.

Valentine’s Day Celebration with a Bold Message

To celebrate Valentine’s Day, Self-Esteem shed hypersexuality and political themes for a refreshing take influenced by house music, serving as a second preview from her eagerly awaited upcoming album “ACDENTED WOMAN.”

In “69,” Self-Esteem, whose real name is Rebecca Lucy Taylor, explores various sexual positions, emphasizing the importance of communication during intimacy, while tackling the inequality women face in satisfying men.

The recently released track features Meatball, a Drag Icon, who discussed similar themes on his podcast.

Self-Esteem sings in the first verse of the song and the chorus: “The style of dogs feels good, the missionary 40 calories are burned for me / scabric, I find that interesting / spoon always calms / the only thing I hate because I can’t concentrate / no, I just can’t observe, yes, I will never Not time, up to 69.

The music video for “69,” directed by Pierce Dennis, is set to be released shortly. It showcases Taylor performing at a support group for addicts, gradually transforming the session into an intense dance party, complete with red strobe lights.

Regarding “69,” Self-Esteem commented in a press statement: “I always wanted to write a song that lists and evaluates sexual positions. Much of my music articulates what I struggle to express in real life. I love the idea of clearly communicating one’s needs in a quick three-minute home track. It’s also political—women are still often expected to serve others sexually; I hardly hear discussions about how to ‘pretend,’ which is incredibly frustrating! There’s already enough inequality in male/female dynamics. Our bodies endure much pain and suffering, so let us enjoy where we can!”

Involving Meatball in the song was a “cherry on top” for Taylor: “I had already written the song, and a few months later my favorite Meatball Drag Queen said almost the same thing on my podcast, Inaccurate Seconds, and I just knew it was meant to be on the album!”

According to the press release, the album “Complicated Woman” marks a reclamation of control over one’s life while simultaneously acknowledging the extra labor women often must engage in. The album will feature contributions from MoonChild Sanelly, Nadine Shah, and Sue Tompkins of Life Without Buildings.

Self-Esteem has also announced a live theater presentation of the album ahead of its release. An intimate new show titled “Complicated Woman On Air” will take place at the Duke of York’s Theater in London this spring. The limited engagement will feature five shows on April 16, 17, 18, and 19, with the final date showcasing two performances. All shows are now sold out.

Back in 2021, Self-Esteem graced the cover of NME, where she discussed her previous album “Priorities of Pleasure.” “I’ve gone through years of therapy, done a lot of self-work, and read every book out there, and it all returns to true self-performance and self-love,” she shared, reflecting on the internal work she did to create music on her own terms.

“This is an answer to everything, yet it’s still something you shouldn’t do. I find myself on this path quite often, and it’s frustrating. But then I remind myself to hold onto my small part of the world, my community. I accept myself, love myself, and then create my little silly songs and make my little silly dances. If anyone can learn from this and carry it forward, at least I feel I’m making a difference.”
