Jack White Reflects on Performance Length
Jack White shared his thoughts on the ongoing discussions regarding the length of his live shows.
Insights on Live Performance Duration
Taking to Instagram, White expressed his feelings about the conversations surrounding his typical setlist, which usually lasts around 90 minutes and includes between 16 to 22 songs.
“During this amazing electric tour, I noticed plenty of chatter about how long our sets ‘should be on stage,’” White stated. “As if the duration of a show is what determines its quality. I understand we live in an era where some boast, ‘We played for 3 hours last night!’ and brag about it, but I want our fans to know that I have no intention to ‘impress’ in that context.”
He added: “The Beatles and Ramones played 30-minute sets, and if it were up to me, I would do the same at this stage of my career. That’s actually the kind of show I would prefer to do right now. However, there’s a notion that the cost of a ticket demands a longer performance… uh… okay (hahaha), so I will bridge that gap.”
“I’ve seen many rock ‘n’ roll concerts that lasted only 45 minutes, yet completely blew me away and left me inspired,” he continued. “Read the room, leave the audience feeling both exhausted and inspired (hopefully), and I believe it’s possible without needing 3 hours to achieve it.”
