Film Celebrates 200 Years of Clarks

Liam Gallagher, Reikwon, and Ghostface Killah featured in a new film honoring the 200th anniversary of the British footwear brand Clarks. Check it out below.

Directed by Free Free Richardson and narrated by Yasiin Bey, the 18-minute documentary outlines the “Journey from modest beginnings in 1825 on the streets of Somerset to becoming one of the world’s most recognized and beloved shoe brands.”

Evolving Influence of Clarks

The film highlights the company’s evolution, cultural significance, and global impact, featuring numerous personalities from the music industry and beyond.

Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher remarked: “I don’t think there are any other brands that compare. It’s hard for me to even look at other brands. At the top of the shoe game, not much compares.”

He continued, “They are just comfortable, and they never let me down. They deliver exactly what they promise. They’ve always served me well.”

Reflecting on his childhood memories of Clarks, Gallagher stated: “My earliest memories of Clarks probably date back to my school days. Everyone wore them; they were all the rage back then. I wore Clarks throughout the 90s, and I have a lot of memories associated with them.”

Wu-Tang Clan member Ghostface Killah expressed, “Wow, 200 years is crazy… TVs hadn’t even been invented, there were no refrigerators.”

He reminisced about how Clarks became iconic during hip-hop’s golden era in the USA, noting: “In the golden era around 1988-89, when there were only a few pairs of sneakers, Clarks was right there with them.”

His fellow WTC member Raekwon referred to them as “up and down shoes, because you can wear them dressed up or casually.”

Other notable figures featured in the promotional material include Jamaican artist Lila Ike, DJ and host Becca Dudley, and legendary DJ Big Youth, alongside various members of the Clarks family.

Ike articulated: “If you know anything about the Jamaicans, it’s that whenever we see something we like, we cherish it. Clarks holds something truly special.”

Clarks’ Legacy Over Two Centuries

Dudley, who is immersed in Jamaican music and culture, added: “Clarks was this sought-after, premium British brand that everyone wanted to get their hands on.”

Big Youth emphasized: “Clarks became a sensation among young people who were able to afford them.”

The documentary notes: “For two centuries, Clarks has identified and redefined self-ownership, transforming from a humble workshop in Somerset into a global brand.

“The story of Clarks began in 1825 when Cyrus and James Clark combined craftsmanship with innovation, repurposing sheepskin remnants from rug production to create slippers and shoes rooted in heritage.”

“This year, we proudly celebrate 200 years of heritage and those who have welcomed the brand as their own.”
