The Grammy Incident
The rapper Killer Mike has reported that he is suing a private security company following his arrest at the Grammy Awards in 2024.
Today (February 4) marks a year since the rapper, known for his work in “The Jewels Run,” was detained shortly after winning three awards – Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Album for his song “Scientists and Engineers,” along with another award for his track “Michael.” His arrest stemmed from an incident where he allegedly pushed a guard during the ceremony.
Legal Developments
In June of the same year, TMZ reported that prosecutors in Los Angeles decided not to file charges against the artist, whose real name is Michael Render. He was informed that he had successfully completed his hearing with his city lawyer and agreed to undertake community service through a non-profit organization of his choice.
The Los Angeles Police Department noted that he was taken into custody due to a physical altercation at the Crypto.com arena and was booked for battery as a result of the incident involving the guard.
Killer Mike later stated to Pitchfork that he “faced excessive force from the guard” and expressed gratitude to his fans for their concern. He subsequently reflected on the incident through his track in the song “Smirki Me,” accompanied by a music video depicting the moments he was restrained and handcuffed by police.
Looking back on the events of February 4 and the humiliation he felt, he rapped: “I won a Grammy for spitting out my grammar / I did it for Atlanta, Bruch / swept as a cleaner / was sent to Welyam.“
The Lawsuit
Now, TMZ reports that Killer Mike plans to sue over this incident. In his lawsuit, he named the security company responsible for the Grammy event – S&S Labor Force Inc., which operates as the private security for JRM. He claims the company granted too much authority to its employees, which resulted in his unlawful detention.
The lawsuit also alleges that the guards assaulted and restrained him publicly at a high-profile event, leading to emotional distress and public humiliation.
S&S has dismissed the allegations as “unreasonable,” stating in an email provided to Katya Stone of Rolling Stone that, “S&S Labor Force Inc. is proud of our commitment to ethical practices and the safety of our employees, clients, and guests. We have strict protocols in place to ensure that all actions taken by our security personnel align with the law and our company standards. The claims currently under consideration appear to be based on misinformation and lack credible evidence.”
NME has reached out to Killer Mike for a statement. This is an ongoing story.
