After being nominated four times previously in the album of the year category but not winning, Beyoncé finally achieved the coveted honor this year for her acclaimed album, Cowboy Carter. She can now add this prestigious award to her extensive list of accolades.

A Landmark Achievement

In addition to her first victory in this category, Billboard reports that Beyoncé is also the first Black woman of the current century to receive this recognition as a solo artist. She has also set a new record for the most Grammy wins, currently standing at 35 trophies – three of which she won this year.

In addition to album of the year, she received the Best Country Album award, which was presented to her by Taylor Swift. This milestone makes Beyoncé the first Black woman to achieve this honor.

In her acceptance speech, she stated: “I did not expect this … I want to thank God that I can still do what I love after so many years. I would like to thank all the incredible country artists who accepted this album. I believe that sometimes the genre is a code word that keeps us in our place as artists, and I just want to encourage people to pursue their passions.”

A Long-Awaited Victory

Beyoncé’s album of the year victory comes after her husband Jay-Z criticized the Recording Academy last year for not awarding her despite her numerous nominations: “Think about it: the artist with the most Grammy nominations has never won album of the year; that doesn’t work.”

Prior to her Grammy 2025 victories, she announced the highly anticipated Cowboy Carter Tour, although dates and locations are yet to be announced.

In a glowing five-star review of “Cowboy Carter,” Yanessa Williams wrote for NME: “Even when interpreted purely as an artistic spectacle, it presents an undeniable thrill, oscillating intensely within a project that dares to be intimate and vocally oriented while resonating with country newcomers.”

The album was crowned the seventh-best album of 2024 by NME. Williams further stated: “The narratives surrounding Beyoncé’s eighth studio album were framed as a country record. Yet, when viewed as a whole, the ‘Carter Cowboy’ serves as an eclectic tribute to South American culture, blending trap, bounce, gospel, and soul, showcasing a masterclass in creativity from an artist who never forgets her roots.”
