Sony Music Publishing Expands to Thailand
Sony Music Publishing (SMP) has inaugurated its first office in Thailand.
Industry veteran Tatchara Longprasert has been appointed as CEO to spearhead this new venture.
Longprasert arrives with extensive experience, having previously held the position of Director of Sales and Recruitment at Sonray Music. His career includes roles at Warner Music Thailand, BEC World PLC (Thai TV 3), and SM Entertainment, contributing over a decade of experience in the industry.
The Bangkok office aims to provide local songwriters with direct access to global music publishing resources and international networks.
Growth in Thailand’s Music Industry
This expansion is aligned with the promising growth of Thailand’s music industry, as indicated by IFPI data. The country has generated $105.4 million in music revenue this year, with streaming accounting for more than 90% of the total revenue.
“We look forward to welcoming many talented and creative songwriters to SMP Thailand and letting their work be heard around the world.”
Carol Ng, Sony Music Publishing
“Thailand is rich in diverse sounds and stories. With the rapid growth of the Thai repertoire, an increasing number of artists are seeking a specialist music publishing company that offers valuable global connections and expertise to manage their publishing needs,” stated Carol Ng, President Asia, Sony Music Publishing.
“I’m thrilled to be part of this new journey in Thailand, which will allow us to support local talent while expanding their global network.”
Tatchara Longprasert, Sony Music Publishing
Longprasert expressed his enthusiasm, stating: “We are dedicated to upholding the integrity of music publishing, ensuring fair and transparent practices, and providing enhanced support to songwriters and composers in Thailand. This marks a significant step, and we are proud to contribute to the ongoing growth of the Thai creative community.”
Regional Expansion in Asia-Pacific
This expansion occurs during a period of substantial growth in Asian music markets, which are gaining international recognition. The new Thai office complements SMP’s existing network in the Asia-Pacific region. In 2022, Sony Music Group (SMG) established its flagship Southeast Asia headquarters in Singapore, which hosts various SMG companies, including SMP, Sony Music Entertainment, and the artist services company Orchard.
Sony Music Publishing was launched in Indonesia in 2021 to promote and develop Indonesian songwriters both locally and globally.
Additionally, other music companies have recently expanded their presence in Thailand. In September 2024, Universal Music Group completed the $70 million acquisition of RS Group, the second-largest catalog of recorded music in Thailand. Furthermore, the company has entered into a joint venture with a Thai company, IAM, and established a strategic agreement with Thai record label Hype Train in 2022.
In November 2024, ADA Around The World, the independent distribution and artist services division of Warner Music Group, appointed Arisa Maruekatat as Head of ADA Thailand, following her previous key roles at LINEAR TV, TikTok, and GMM Grammy.
