Elfman expressed his sorrow, stating: “What can I say? His passing is a colossal loss for me, which is difficult for me to even express in words. I’m still in complete shock.
“I suddenly recall 1977, attending a now-defunct film festival in Los Angeles called Filmex. My friend Matthew Bright and I learned about the midnight premiere of an underground film titled Eraserhead. We couldn’t miss it. The theater, as I remember, was fairly decent but not packed; by the end of the film, it was almost empty as many had left.
“However, for my friend and me, it was a revelation. It was thrilling… astonishing… how many words can I use here… to describe my reaction to this incredibly unique, visually captivating, terrifying, humorous, and utterly original movie. From that moment forward, I eagerly anticipated what this astonishing young director would conjure next. He certainly didn’t disappoint.”
