Upcoming Album Details
The track serves as the fourth and final single from the band's upcoming album, Night Life, set to be released on March 21st via Fiction Records. This will mark their sixth album, coinciding with their 20th anniversary. Head here to pre-order.
With “Larger Than Life,” Faris Badwan and his bandmates continue to open a new chapter in The Horrors’ discography, crafting a powerful and anthemic sound.
“Are we losing touch/ With all the things we hold dear?/ Have we fallen apart?/ No way to turn back?/ You're always in disguise/ But are you ever satisfied?” croons the frontman in the haunting opening verse, accompanied by swirling, otherworldly instrumentals.
“And even though I know you're giving yourself to someone else, I wish you were here tonight.” Check it out below.
Band’s Insights on the Track
Discussing the new track, the band emphasized their desire for the song to convey a different perspective compared to other recent singles.
“More Than Life exhibits a different intensity than our recent singles; it’s more driving and direct. Written in the heart of Canary Wharf, it feels increasingly like Blade Runner. It’s an unusual place for creative endeavors because the environment can be particularly harsh,” they shared.
“We needed a few more songs for the album before heading to Los Angeles to record at Yves’ studio, and we found ourselves in that isolated phase of the process where the outside world felt nonexistent. Essentially, the song involves questioning what's important to you, and by that stage, we had a clear direction of where we were headed.”
The upcoming album, which marks the band’s forthcoming 20th anniversary, will showcase a new ‘sonic’ aesthetic.
Featuring the core duo – vocalist Faris Badwan and bassist Rhys Webb – the album will also introduce Amelia Kidd on keyboards and Telegram’s Jordan Cook on drums, making this the first album not to include all five original members.
“The resulting album is a record of weight and space, melancholy and euphoria; a record that unites seemingly disparate ideas as only The Horrors can,” reads the press description. The term “nightlife” here is devoid of the vibrancy associated with pubs and clubs; instead, it encompasses thoughts that unfold under the cover of darkness, exploring where one’s mind wanders when the world sleeps. The record emerges from a need to recapture the raw, instinctive spirit of the band's early work.”
Demos for new tracks originated in Webb’s basement apartment in North London and began to take shape in Los Angeles with producer Yves Rothman. The finishing touches were added back in London, with Kidd collaborating remotely from Glasgow.
News regarding the line-up changes comes after the Southend band announced in 2021 they would perform as a four-piece, confirming keyboardist Tom Furse would take a break from performing. Furse mentioned that touring life wasn't conducive for him, expressing he was “more of a creator than a performer.”
The original lineup included vocalist Badwan, guitarist Hayward, keyboardist Furse, bassist Webb, and drummer Joe Spurgeon.
Before sharing singles from the upcoming album, The Horrors had not released new music since the three-track “Against The Blade” EP in November 2021, which followed the “Lout” EP released earlier that same year.
Later this year, the band will perform at the Dot To Dot festival in Bristol and Nottingham alongside artists like Fat Dog, Sprints, Big Special, Honeyglaze, Kate Bollinger, Låpsley, and Nimino.
