Impact of the Wildfires
Since the devastating wildfires began on January 7, more than 180,000 residents of Los Angeles have been forced to evacuate their homes. As of now, there have been 27 confirmed deaths. Additionally, more than 20 individuals are considered missing. Among those who lost their homes was singer-songwriter Jhene Aiko.
Although Aiko and her two children managed to escape, all their belongings and memories inside their home were lost to the flames. She expressed her grief by writing: “Me and my orphanage are no more. Burned to the ground with all our things inside. Lord have mercy. Thank you that we still have each other. Starting from scratch. My heart is so heavy.”
Now, Jhené Aiko and her wellness brand Jhenetics are showing appreciation to the frontline workers who risked their lives to extinguish five consecutive raging fires in Los Angeles. Aiko and Jhenetics provided complimentary massages for firefighters and utilized Jhenetics products to help alleviate their stress and pain.
Aiko and her brand wrote on Instagram: “Thank you to our first responders, those who spent days away from their families working tirelessly to protect us. We hope this small gesture of gratitude will make a difference during these long shifts.”
Community Support and Relief Efforts
Many musicians have stepped up to support affected communities following the wildfires. Beyoncé’s BeyGOOD Foundation donated $2.5 million to assist in battling wildfires in Los Angeles. Paris Hilton established a fund for families impacted by the fires, contributing $100,000 and pledging an additional $100,000 in donations. Meanwhile, Dave Grohl spent his birthday preparing meals for those displaced by the fires.
Mexican-American group Fuerza Regida rented an entire hotel for a week to provide shelter for 50 families fleeing the wildfires.
Charli XCX called on brands that donate her clothes to “give them to people who really need it.” She also shared information about a clothing drive organized by stylist Lana Jay Lackey, urging others to join and contribute.
Ariana Grande, Billie Eilish, and others expressed their sorrow over the “heartbreaking” devastation caused by the bushfires by sharing resources for those in need.
Members of the Los Angeles music community shared with NME about the significant damage: various venues, studios, and artists were affected by the fire.
Additionally, it has been announced that artists like Billie Eilish, Stevie Nicks, Olivia Rodrigo, Green Day, No Doubt, and more will perform at the upcoming FireAid benefit concert on January 30th.
