The entertainment industry is mourning the passing of Manchester United and Scottish football icon Denis Law.

His family confirmed the sad news in a statement on Friday (January 17), revealing that he had died at the age of 84. “He fought a hard battle, but finally, now he has found peace. We would like to thank everyone who has contributed to his well-being and care, both past and recent. We know how much people supported and loved him, and that love was always appreciated and mattered.”

Legacy of a Football Legend

In 2021, Law received a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease and vascular dementia.

The centre-forward is the only Scottish player to have ever won the Ballon d’Or, awarded annually to the world’s best footballer in 1964. Known by the nicknames “The King” and “The Lawman,” he was part of the legendary “Holy Trinity” at Manchester United in the 1960s alongside George Best and Bobby Charlton.

He shattered the British transfer record twice, first joining Torino for £110,000 in 1961 and then moving to United for £115,000 the following year. During his 11 years at Old Trafford, he found the net 237 times, only behind Charlton and Wayne Rooney, and played a vital role in their European Cup victory in 1968.

Several renowned United fans have shared their fond memories of Law, including DJ Dave Haslam, who highlighted the late striker’s obituary shared on X’s Manchester History account.

Tributes and Memories

Broadcaster Terry Christian stated: “The term ‘legend’ is overused these days. Denis Law is a legend in every way: the greatest footballer Scotland has ever produced, the greatest instinctive striker Europe has ever seen. I had the honor of meeting him and speaking with him several times. Rest in peace, King Denis.”

“Every day we lose people who were an important part of our childhood,” he continued. “Not everyone can make us cry. Of course, it’s not just us United fans of a certain age. RIP King Denis – what a United team in heaven.”

Sacha Lord, founder of Parklife Festival and Warehouse Project in Manchester and current nighttime economy advisor for Greater Manchester, also paid his respects via X. “The word ‘legend’ is overused, but he truly was one,” he wrote. “Rest in peace, Denis Law.”

Radio host and former music journalist Danny Baker, a dedicated football fan, shared his fond memories of Law. “RIP Denis Law, who I always considered the epitome of a footballer growing up,” he said. “Also, I liked the fact that he was like Danny Kaye and was always in on some private joke. Great, great man. And don’t be afraid to mix things up on occasion.”

Presenter Eamonn Holmes, another fan of Manchester United, expressed, “Denis Law, the last of the Holy Trinity, has left us. One of my first jobs at BBC Northwest was taking him home every Friday night. Don’t think I’ve ever surpassed him! Rest in peace, Lowman.”

Two statues in honor of Law were erected outside Old Trafford: one near the Stretford End and another featuring him alongside Charlton and Best in the stadium’s forecourt.
