Artists and Personal Boundaries
Soccer Mommy stated that artists “shouldn't reveal very private, personal shit” to attract listeners to their music.

The artist, whose real name is Sophie Ellison, released her fourth studio album, Evergreen, last year, marking the long-awaited follow-up to 2022's Sometimes, Forever.
In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Allison shared her thoughts on how artists often feel pressured to explore their personal lives in their music. “People want to talk about these things, but if you need help, no one understands it,” she expressed to the publication.
“Mental health issues in the music world have become a frequent topic, but I personally don't like discussing it,” she continued. “You don’t have to share very personal, private details for people to listen.”
“In this industry, it’s challenging to decline opportunities because the goal is to ascend to the top, seize every chance – embrace life fully,” she added. “Taking a mental health break won’t necessarily lead to greater success. Mental illness doesn’t fit into the typical schedule.”
Privacy in Music Creation
This sentiment aligns with previous comments she made to NME last year, stating: “Being open in my music doesn’t mean I need to be open in my life. I value my privacy. I don’t even share much with my friends. Music has always been my emotional outlet.”
She further explained, “You may have something personal that you’re also pleased for people to hear. I dislike the notion that you can’t have it both ways,” adding, “You can maintain a level of distance that keeps the music interesting without making your life solely about catering to others’ interests.”
Allison is among a number of young artists who have established public boundaries between their musical careers and personal lives in recent years. Notably, Chappell Roane referred to fans as “weird” and “creepy” in an Instagram post last year.
“It has reached a point where I need to draw lines and set boundaries,” she stated. “I appreciate the success of the project and the love and gratitude I feel. However, I will not tolerate inappropriate behavior from fans.” This sentiment was echoed by Lorde, MUNA, Paramore’s Hayley Williams, and Fleetwood Mac’s Stevie Nicks.
