Rob Lowe has disclosed that he nearly embarked on a music career and even recorded a demo with Toto while under the influence.
Podcast Insights with Bill Simmons
In the latest episode of his SiriusXM podcast Literally! With Rob Lowe, the seasoned actor and ’80s heartthrob shared his journey with journalist, author, and fellow podcaster Bill Simmons.
They delved into discussions about ’80s music and the film Music Box: Yacht Rock: A Documentary, which Simmons recently produced. During this exchange, Lowe recounted his demo experience with the creators of the hit song “Hold The Line”.
“That’s another thing about yacht rock. These songs were literally some of the biggest songs of the year; songs that have won Grammys,” Simmons noted, addressing the negative perceptions surrounding the genre.
“(The Doobie Brothers) ‘Minute by Minute’ won a Grammy, Christopher Cross won like four Grammys. Toto dominated the Grammys. Toto dominated to the extent that people were upset about it. There was a backlash towards the Grammys. They were like, ‘Who the hell are these guys?'” Simmons continued.
Lowe added his own anecdotes, reminiscing about his interactions with the Los Angeles rock band. “I have one for you. There was a point in the ’80s where I definitely drank too much Bolivian marching powder and was just crazy. It was also a time in the careers of young actors when they were too old to play the roles they had portrayed, but too young for roles that would be truly significant and everlasting. You can somehow feel that shift.”
“I love music so much, as evidenced by this conversation and everything, that it occurred to me that maybe I should consider music more seriously, so I recorded a demo with Toto.”
Lowe mentioned that the demo was recorded during his peak fame, thanks to the success of the 1983 film Outsiders and the 1985 hit Saint Elmo’s Fire. At the same time, Toto enjoyed immense fame, particularly following the release of their iconic track “Africa”.
Simmons remarked, “Wow, that’s one of the reasons why you’re the most interesting person in the world. You were around the Showtime Lakers during their title wins in the Magic era. Who weren’t you associated with in Los Angeles during the ’80s?”
“Probably no one, because I take entertainment very seriously too,” Lowe replied.
However, the Californication actor did not elaborate on the specifics of the demo or whether the song with Toto would ever be released.
In other news, last summer, Lowe revealed that he was in the “early stages” of developing a sequel to Saint Elmo’s Fire.
