Sharing Musical Influences
On January 8, the Britpop legend took to his X/Twitter account to share tracks from the British punk icons and describe what it was like to first encounter their music.
He initially posted a YouTube link to the full version of the band’s legendary 1977 album, Never Mind the Bollocks, Here’s the Sex Pistols. This was soon followed by another update where he stated: “If your guitars and your damn attitude don’t resemble these nuggets of days gone by, then you can kiss my bells.”
Gallagher continued to share more tracks from the band’s repertoire, including a “revised” version of “God Save the Queen”, released in 2022 in honor of the Platinum Jubilee, along with “Bodies” and their third single “Pretty Empty”.

Reflecting on Punk’s Legacy
He also shared a link to “The Great Rock ‘n’ Roll Swindle,” the theme song from The Great Rock ‘n’ Roll Swindle soundtrack. This track was recorded live during the second day of the singer’s audition and filmed for the movie, later spending six weeks on the UK Top 75 charts.
“I remember when I first saw this record, I thought it was a damn Ouija board. Then I heard it and all heaven turned upside down,” Liam recounted in a separate message. “If you don’t have one, buy one NOW.”

A series of posts on X celebrating punk veterans followed Gallagher’s response to Glen Matlock, who described Oasis as “boring” last year.
Matlock, known for his work with Blondie and Iggy Pop, made these remarks during an NME interview while promoting his 2023 solo album Consequences Coming. He stated, “I’ve always considered Oasis to be a bit of a status quo. (With Quo), it was enough to hear one song once. A bit like Oasis: you only need to hear one song once. I just find them the same.”
Although he praised Liam as “fantastic,” likening him to Johnny Rotten but more tuneful, he expressed reluctance to see the band live, commenting, “(Liam) has a magnetic stage personality: he can just stand there and it’s captivating. The rest of the guys? No. I think they’re bored in person. I would never go to them.”
He also mentioned a near-collaboration with Oasis in the mid-’90s that fell through due to his energetic stage presence. “The reason they didn’t need me at all is because they needed someone to stand still,” he explained. “I went to see them and thought, the last thing they need is anyone else standing still.”
Taking to X after the interview, Liam fired back at Matlock, stating: “FUCK HIM SID WAS GUNS,” referencing late Sex Pistols bassist Sid Vicious, who became one of punk’s most iconic figures after Matlock’s departure in 1977.
The Sex Pistols have reunited with Frank Carter, who took over as frontman last year, and are scheduled to perform at Download Festival later this summer. They will also play at the summer sessions in Glasgow on June 21 and Dreamland Margate on August 23. Click here for tickets and more information.
As for Oasis, the band is set to make their long-anticipated return to the stage later this summer, beginning with a series of massive stadium shows across the UK and Ireland. Following that, they will embark on a world tour, including performances in North America, South America, Australia, South Korea, and Japan.
Details about which members will join Liam and Noel Gallagher for the significant shows remain scarce, although the frontman has hinted at potential setlists and aspirations for new material.
