Paris Jackson Celebrates Five Years of Sobriety
Paris Jackson shared before and after videos of her experience battling drug and alcohol addiction to celebrate five years of sobriety.
Inspiring Journey to Recovery
The musician and daughter of the late Michael Jackson posted the video on her official Instagram account yesterday (January 7). The video begins with clips of her appearing to be under the influence of drugs and alcohol. It then shows a slideshow of photos of her journey to sobriety, as well as videos of her looking healthier, dancing, performing and being surrounded by friends and pets.
“To those who have helped me on this journey, even at the beginning, middle or all the way, you know who you are and I owe my life to you. Thank you. 5 years, thank God,” read the note that ended the video.
The caption on Jackson’s post read: “Hi, I’m a PC, alcoholic and heroin addict. Today marks 5 years clean and sober from all drugs and alcohol. To say I’m grateful would be a poor euphemism. Gratitude barely scratches the surface. It is because I am sober that I can smile today.
“I can do music. I experience the joy of loving my dogs and cats. I feel grief in all its glory. I can mourn. I can laugh. I’m going to dance. I can trust. I feel the sun on my skin and I feel warm. I’ve found that life goes on whether I’m sober or not, but today I can come to it. Here’s a small snapshot of what my sobriety has made possible, and oh my god, I can’t believe I missed almost all of it. Thank you 1 • 7 • 20”
The model and musician received praise from various colleagues in the comments section, with her aunt – and Michael’s older sister – La Toya Jackson writing: “Congratulations Paris. I’m so, so proud of you and your growth and strength and accomplishments,” and applauding Paris’ efforts to “help others who are going through this.”
Paris Hilton also chimed in, writing, “So proud of you sis,” while actress Lucy Hale shared, “You’re amazing, amazing, amazing.”
Paris’s father, Michael Jackson, died in Los Angeles in 2009 from acute propofol intoxication. The Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner ruled his death a homicide. His personal physician, Conrad Murray, prescribed him propofol along with the anti-anxiety benzodiazepines lorazepam and midazolam. In November 2011, Murray was found guilty of manslaughter.
