Squid Game’s Second Season and TOP’s Comeback
Squid Game director Hwang Dong Hyuk has described the second season of the acclaimed series as the “comeback” of Korean rapper TOP.
TOP’s Controversies and Challenges
TOP, whose real name is Choi Seung-hyun, received a 10-month prison sentence and a two-year suspension from mandatory military service in 2017 after being convicted of marijuana use.
In the wake of this controversy, the rapper and actor, who gained popularity as the lead rapper of the boy band BIGBANG in the 2000s, faced expulsion from the Korean entertainment industry before starring in Squid Game.
In the Netflix thriller, he portrays Thanos, a well-known rapper who becomes Player 230 and indulges in drugs during the competition.
In an interview with People, Dong Hyuk elaborated on his decision to invite TOP to join the cast and commended his performance. He remarked: “It’s a comeback after quite a long time, especially because he portrays a character who is a rapper and also a person who takes drugs.
“I believe it required a great deal of courage for him to take on this role, particularly since the character shares many negative aspects with him personally.”
He continued: “Despite the lengthy hiatus, I must say, as a director, he has delivered an exceptionally impressive performance, and I am very pleased with what he has contributed to the character.”
TOP’s Journey of Redemption
Following his indictment in June 2017, TOP expressed his remorse to fans through a handwritten apology, stating, “First of all, I would like to express my sincere apologies to many of you for causing great disappointment and concern. I’m deeply embarrassed that I cannot appear before you to apologize.
“I have no excuses and I fully accept any punishment. I am very sorry and fearful that I have left a lasting scar on everyone’s hearts, including my members, my agency, friends, and family. I will repeatedly reflect on my actions. Once again, I apologize for not being able to personally apologize to everyone.”
After his arraignment, he was hospitalized after being discovered unconscious due to a suspected overdose of prescribed benzodiazepines. Fortunately, his mother confirmed the following day that he had regained consciousness and was on the mend.
The second season of Squid Game premiered on December 26, three years after the first season’s release. NME awarded it four stars in their review, noting, “After a sluggish start, the second season of Hwang Dong Hyuk’s Immorality Competition truly finds its stride,” and remarked, “With Squid Game The third and final season is set to debut next year, and it’s hardly a spoiler to mention that no clear resolution is in sight. However, the final episode remains breathtaking and suffocatingly emotional. You’ll be left gasping for breath as Squid Game ensnares you and holds you tightly.”
