Japanese Breakfast Unveils ‘Orlando In Love,’ Announces New Album ‘For Melancholy Brunettes (& Sad Women)’ and 2025 Tour Dates

New Album Announcement

Japan Breakfast has unveiled their upcoming album, “For Melancholy Brunettes (& Sad Women)” and has released the lead single, “Orlando In Love.”

About The Album

Produced by Grammy Award winner Blake Mills (Sky Ferreira, Fiona Apple), Michelle Zauner and her band’s fourth album explores a more profound and darker sound, described in the press release as “an artistic statement of purpose: mature, complex, a contemplative work that evokes the romantic thrill of a Gothic novel.”

“For Melancholy Brunettes (and Sad Women)” draws inspiration from European romanticism, marking a shift from the band’s earlier works like the 2017 sci-fi release “Soft Sounds from Another Planet” and the upbeat 2021 album “Jubilee.” The album is set for release on March 21st via Dead Oceans and is available for pre-order/pre-save. Here.

The first glimpse into this new era of Japanese Breakfast was the lead single, “Orlando In Love.” The song takes inspiration from John Cheever’s interpretation of Orlando Innamorato, the unfinished 68-and-a-half song epic by Renaissance poet Matteo Maria Boiardo.

Japan Breakfast’s “For Melancholy Brunettes (& Sad Women)” follows their Grammy-nominated “Jubilee” and Michelle Zauner’s best-selling memoir, Crying at H Mart, which propelled her into the mainstream. Reflecting on this success in a press release, Zauner stated: “I felt seduced by getting what I always wanted. I was flying too close to the sun and realized that if I continued walking, I would die.”

In a four-star review of “Jubilee,” NME noted: “Having made a name for herself writing about the toughest of topics, Zauner proves here that you can find joy in that pain, even when it seems impossible. Let “Jubilee” be your guide.”
