Check Out Mogwai’s Whimsical and “Delightfully Quirky” New Single ‘Fanzine Made Of Flesh’

Mogwai releases new single

Mogwai have released a new single called “Fanzine Made Of Flesh” – you can listen to it below.

Details about the upcoming album

The song is the latest preview of the Glasgow band’s 11th studio album, The Bad Fire, due out on January 24 via Rock Action.pre-order/save here).

In a statement, frontman Stuart Braithwaite explained: “’Fanzine Made Of Flesh’ was written in Brooklyn while I was staying at (Franz Ferdinand) Alex Kapranos’ house in the fall of 2023.

“In my head it sounds like a cross between ABBA, Swervedriver and Kraftwerk, although that may be funny. It originally had straight vocals, but on the last day of recording we encoded it. It’s a whole different ballgame and I’m really happy with how it turned out.”

Futuristic singing is paired with Braithwaite’s stormy and distorted guitar chords, and the single also boasts arpeggiated synth lines and vibrant keyboard lines.

“Fanzine Made Of Flesh” is accompanied by a vibrant official music video directed by Agnes House, who describes the video as “a pseudo-movie trailer with a convoluted plot that is impossible to understand.”

“When they sent me the track, I was resigned to the fact that I couldn’t understand a single word and didn’t want to know where the title came from,” House said. “You kind of have to piece it all together yourself.”

The director continued: “I really wanted it to feel like a feature-length film version with obscure horror tones, emotional complexity and references to queer ’90s feature films, as well as an autobiographical storyline about growing up non-binary, but without realizing it. Maybe one day I’ll expand it into a full-fledged film.”

In a three-star review of Mogwai’s previous album: NME wrote: “As The Love Continues opens the album beautifully but falters at times in the second half. Again, the whole record sounds so much better live – and will continue to work when Mogwai finally hits the road again.”
