In an interview with Diversity, Grande, alongside co-star Cynthia Erivo, shared insights on how her singing and speaking voice evolved to fit her role as Galinda in the film adaptation of the beloved Broadway classic. This transformation has not gone unnoticed, but Grande attributes it to a deep commitment to her craft.
Insights on the Role of Galinda
“Perhaps people underestimate how much time we spent searching for and embodying these characters,” she explained. “When certain intonations or mannerisms linger, it often leads to jokes. However, we were immersed in our work, responding to the demands of the play.”
Along with adopting a more operatic singing style, Grande has also embraced a lighter speaking tone during her performances and the film’s promotional tour. “I think it might stay,” she remarked regarding the changes. “Galinda required extensive vocal work from me. Some aspects may fade, but I’m thankful for the elements that will remain. It’s wonderful to connect with oneself and carry the essence of each day.”
During the interview, Grande and Erivo reflected on the success of Wicked, which garnered Golden Globe nominations for both actresses and found acclaim at the Academy Awards.
“I’m incredibly thankful and proud of the authenticity we were able to portray,” Grande shared. “Many people approached us, concerned and asking, ‘How are you holding up?’ But we simply exchanged looks and thought: we are grateful, and we float.”
Erivo countered rumors about different pay rates for their roles, stating that they negotiated their contracts together. “We both went through discussions like, ‘What number are we settling on? How do you feel about this?’ We were completely honest,” she recalled. “That level of openness is quite rare.”
Both actors are gearing up for the awards season campaign for Wicked while also preparing to promote its sequel, Evil: For Good, set to hit theaters on November 21st. Erivo has recently mentioned co-writing an original song for the sequel with Steven Schwartz, the original composer of the Broadway production.
In a four-star review of Wicked, NME noted: “Wicked flags a little in the middle, but not enough to lessen the dramatic climax where Elphaba and Glinda journey to Oz to encounter the legendary Wonderful Wizard (Jeff Goldblum). His and Yeo’s brief musical performances showcase their charming presence, while Erivo and Grande shine with extraordinary vocal prowess.”
“It’s essential to highlight their wonderful chemistry, enhanced by Erivo’s bursts of intensity and Grande’s sharp comedic timing. While you may not leap from your seat by the end, you’ll surely feel compelled to enjoy the soundtrack on your way home. Funny, vibrant, and empathetic towards outsiders, this film is genuinely ‘Shiz.’
