Lamb Of God’s Mark Morton Marks Six Years of Sobriety: ‘Recovery Is Possible’

Mark Morton Reflects On Sobriety

Lamb Of God guitarist Mark Morton has shared his thoughts on reaching the milestone of six years of sobriety.

Overcoming Addiction

The musician, who has faced addiction to alcohol and opiates, took to social media to convey a message of hope for those grappling with similar struggles, emphasizing that recovery is achievable.

“I woke up this morning clean and sober for six years. This came after decades of drinking almost every day, with the last 10 years marked by an aggressive opiate addiction that nearly cost me my life,” he stated.

“I’m sharing this in the hope that someone who feels as hopeless, helpless, and paralyzed by addiction as I once did may read it and begin to see that recovery is possible.”

“You can get clean and enjoy a life beyond your wildest dreams. Seek out a recovering alcoholic or drug addict and ask them about their journey. You’re worth it.”

In his recently released memoir, Wasteland: A Heavy Metal Memoir, Morton expressed gratitude towards Slash for helping to make “sobriety look cool” during his recovery journey.

“Slash has been quite forthcoming about his own experiences,” Morton remarked. “During my quest for sobriety, before I achieved any long-lasting recovery, Slash was incredibly supportive and offered valuable insights.”

“I believe that individuals like Slash, who openly share their struggles with addiction, play a significant role in changing perceptions. For someone like me, who has low self-esteem, seeing someone I admire embrace sobriety made it appealing. I appreciate that representation because it was part of what I needed to recover.”

“Addiction is not an intellectual dilemma,” Morton noted. “Some of the brightest people I know battle with substance abuse. Those who aren’t addicts often overlook this reality. It transcends reason and logic; it’s something much deeper. The example set by those I looked up to showed me that sobriety can also be associated with being cool. I had mistakenly thought that being a drug addict and alcoholic was integral to rock and roll, but that’s a false narrative.”

Lamb Of God’s latest album, Omens, was released in 2022, and the band has been performing at events like Hammersonic and Knotfest Australia this year.
