Catch Fontaines DC’s Grian Chatten Team Up with Kneecap on the ‘Better Way To Live’ Stage in Belfast!

Collaboration In Belfast

Fontaines DC frontman Grian Chatten made a special appearance with Kneecap during their performance of ‘Better Way To Live’ in Belfast last night (December 21). Watch the footage below.

Significance Of The Event

The band’s monumental show at the SSE Arena in Belfast was hailed as the largest Irish-language performance in the city’s history, occurring shortly after the passing of Mughlai Bap’s father, Gearoid Ó Cairealláin.

On the same day (December 21), the hip-hop trio shared the sad news on social media, stating: “He was an Irish language revolutionary, a social activist, a loving father, husband and an inspiration to many. We are heartbroken,” adding, “Tonight is for him.”

During the concert, Chatten, who recently performed with The Pogues in Dublin, joined Kneecap to sing the track “Better Way To Live” from their album Fine Art, eliciting an enthusiastic response from the audience. Check out the reactions to this memorable moment below.

Film And Album Highlights

Earlier this year, the film Patella explored the band’s unconventional rise to fame and focused on Michael Fassbender’s character, Arlo Ó Cairealláin, a devoted advocate for Irish language and culture and the father of Naoise “Moghlai Bap” Ó Cairealláin, although he was not a direct representative of Gearóid Ó Cairealláin.

Patella has recently been recognized by NME as the best film of 2024, highlighting: “Inspired by the trio’s experiences growing up in Belfast post-Troubles, along with their humor and creativity, this dark comedy, docudrama, and fictional origin story follows low-level drug dealers Mughlai and Moe as they navigate life amidst political strife.”

“Ultimately, through their experiences with creative drug addiction, they find a passion for music and form the band Kneecap alongside a local teacher. This film is hailed as the funniest and most gripping band biopic ever produced.”

The film has now been nominated for two Oscars – Best International Feature and Best Original Song – with the final nominee list to be unveiled on January 17.

This month, The Last secured seven awards at the British Independent Film Awards (BIFA), including a shared award for its stars.

In 2024, the group released their debut album, Fine Art, which also received accolades from NME as one of the year’s standout albums. Commenting on the album, NME stated: “Audacious, clever, and countercultural: it encompasses everything one desires in a debut album.”

“The Belfast trio exults on ‘Fine Art’, unveiling a new lexicon of Irish phrases for their humor interwoven with some of the most electrifying festival anthems of 2024. To frustrated parents, we say: Tá fáilte romhat!

The group was also featured on an NME cover earlier this year. In an interview, they shared how they managed to raise nearly £100,000 for a volunteer gym in the Aida refugee camp in Palestine, spread their message during notable television appearances, and joined a boycott of SXSW this year due to its collaboration with the army.
