Unreleased Music Discovery

Unheard and unreleased music from Michael Jackson has been found in an abandoned storage facility – read more below.

Rare Tapes Unearthed

As reported exclusively by Hollywood Reporter, several tapes and DATs featuring Jackson’s unheard music were discovered in an old storage facility located in the San Fernando Valley.

The remarkable find was made by former Highway Patrol officer Gregg Musgrove while he was “hunting for treasure” in a warehouse that he had recently purchased from a friend in Van Nuys. This unusual property was once owned by singer and music producer Brian Lauren.

A total of 12 cassettes dated from 1989 to 1991 were uncovered. Musgrove’s inventory revealed that 15 unheard songs were located on the tapes; some of these tracks had previously been teased or had snippets leaked, while others were completely unknown. Among the unreleased music is a collaboration with LL Cool J titled “Truth On Youth,” which the rapper indicated was recorded earlier this year. He confirmed that they recorded music together, but noted that the songs were “not good enough” for release.

Legal Ownership and Future Plans

According to Hollywood Reporter, it appears that aside from Jackson’s estate, Musgrove will be the only party able to hear these recordings. Although Musgrove and his lawyer presented the tapes to Jackson’s estate, they indicated that the estate had declined to acquire them.

Subsequently, Musgrove received a letter from the Jackson estate stating that while it did not assert ownership of the tapes, any future buyers of the tapes would not hold rights to the recordings or compositions already owned by the estate.

The Hollywood Reporter clarified that the tapes are not master copies – those originals are secured in the estate’s vault. The estate commented, “The Michael Jackson Estate was presented with DAT copies, not master recordings, of Michael’s music, and we have verified that the actual master recordings were already in the Estate’s vaults. It should be understood that ownership and rights to utilize the recordings remain with MJJP Records and that no commercial or other activities can be conducted with DAT copies.”

This essentially means that while these recordings cannot be made public, they can be privately listened to by those who own them.

Musgrove and his lawyer have stated their plan to auction off the recordings to Michael Jackson fans, intending to present them to four major auction houses soon. They anticipate that the tapes will sell for at least seven figures.

In related news, Jackson’s upcoming biopic Michael has been postponed until early October 2025 in the US, with international premiere dates still pending. Limited details about the film have emerged, although the first trailer was shown to critics at CinemaCon in April and received positive feedback, yet it has not been released to the public.
